| A 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster 2+2 Chassis: TBC
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was designed by Paul Bracq a young Frenchman who had studied at art school in Paris and worked for the industrial designer Philippe Charbonneaux. Bracq joined Mercedes-Benz in 1957 and his first major project was working on the Model W113 launched in 1963. The SL stands for Super Leicht or Super Lightweight. The distinctive 'pagoda' roof is in fact a safety feature providing greater rigidity and protection in the case of an accident.
This absolutely astounding example of the marque was delivered new in Australia in 1970 by York Motors of Sydney, NSW. Purchased by its current owner in 2010 this 280 SL underwent the most comprehensive three year bare metal/ground up professional restoration. The body work restoration was undertaken by Graeme Ashton, renowned Mc.Dermonts (Rolls-Royce Coach Work contractor). The mechanical and electrical work was undertaken by Ammstar Mercedes Benz of Fairfield in Victoria. Reassembly of the project was conducted by Garry Ayre (Garry Ayre Jaguar). The interior was specially imported from Mercedes-Benz in Germany and was the last Red set (leather and carpet) from original stock available.Installation and trimming was by Peter Blackman of Cockranes Road, Moorabbin, Vic. The vehicle has been restored completely faithfully with every attention to detail of originality carried out.
The result of this outstanding craftsmanship has resulted in this immaculate Mercedes-Benz 280 SL being judged:- Outright Winner 2014 Mercedes Benz Car Club of Victoria Concours d'Elegance. Including, Best post-war Mercedes-Benz, Best European Sports Car of Show, Best Professional Restoration,Most popular convertible. In the same year this vehicle was seen at the 2014 Motorclassica. In 2015 it was winner of the Mercedes-Benz Concours d'Elegance and judged Champion of Champions, whilst also taking outright honours at the 2015 Royal Automobile Club Victoria, (Mornington Show).
