Known History

1971 Renault Alpine A110

s/n BA0011, engine no. 810-30-0009

Primer with Black Interior

Using Renault’s successful Dauphine and R8 small sedans as a basis, Alpine developed a compact and attractive sports car in the A108 and A110. The bodies were in fiberglass, with a steel backbone, and later examples had sophisticated specifications that included 5-speed gearbox and disc brakes all round. The cars were quite successful in rallies, earning the World Rally Champion title in 1973, and winning Monte Carlo in 1971. In addition to being built in France, the cars were built under license in various other places, including Spain, Mexico, South America, and Bulgaria.

This particular car is an early production Spanish built example, one of 908 built. While most A110s now in the United States were imported later in their lives, this car has been in California since 1971, and remained here ever since. It was reportedly raced by him during the 1980’s, and he kept the car until 1988, when its second owner acquired it. At this point, the car had the flared wheelarches that it still wears. When acquired, the car was assembled and ran well enough to be driven to the end of the block and back, but not much farther. It was then placed in the owner’s shop to be addressed at a later date. Over the years, the paint was stripped, and the body re-gelcoated to high standards. The brake system was also partially rebuilt with many new parts. A hot rodded motor supplied by the Archer brothers, believed to be an R5 unit, was also sourced and installed, and is a unit that came from one of their SCCA Nationals efforts. The original 810 series engine was retained and is included with the car. Other than this work, the car sat indoors waiting to be restored. The second owner kept the car until 2008.

Consequently, the car has a clear and straightforward California history, and is fundamentally sound and quite complete. The only noted missing items are two chrome strips for the right rear air intake and the small lock strip connector (not the strip itself) for the windscreen trim. Naturally, we cannot guarantee that these are the only missing items, but we have performed a careful inventory of the parts, and all other items appear to be present. The quality of the bodywork is quite high, with good even gaps. Once the dust is removed, the undercarriage and chassis are quite clean as well.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a long time California A110 with lots of potential. Difficult to find in the United States in any condition, these cars are unique, attractive and enjoyable, and this one is a blank canvas to take in any number of directions, from tidy weekend street car to historic race car to show car.
