In 1968, the “New Generation” of upscale Mercedes-Benz models, alternatively known as the S-Class, was introduced. These carefully refined five-passenger automobiles continued a tradition of hand-crafted quality and superior engineering, while their formal, classically-inspired styling featured the discreet use of chrome to produce what many consider to be a timeless design. In particular, the Cabriolet variant featured a padded folding top requiring 16 hours of hand labor to complete, while its unitized chassis featured an advanced design with structural reinforcements that provided great rigidity and safety. As expected, interior appointments were a magnificent combination of leather, wood, and chrome.

Base power for “S” models was provided by a 2.8-liter, inline six-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft and dual carburetors, producing 157 horsepower. In SE trim, the “E” stood for “Einspritzung” or fuel injection, and horsepower rose to 180. Capable of top speeds of 120 miles per hour, the 280 SE utilized a sophisticated, fully independent suspension, resulting in taut, responsive handling that made the 280 SE one of the most satisfying Mercedes-Benz models to drive.

A very attractive example, this particular 1969 280 SE Cabriolet remained with a member of the original purchaser’s family until the current owner acquired it in February of 2008. Removed from long-term storage and displaying approximately 32,000 miles, the car was sympathetically refurbished as needed. A bare metal refinish in the original black color revealed an extremely solid and straight body, and the top covering was replaced with custom tailored German fabric in the original grey color, while both the horsehair padding and headliner remain original. The attractive dark green leather interior is original and remains in excellent condition, as is the carpeting, again factory original with the exception of the heel pad, which was replaced. The Cabriolet also benefits from thorough mechanical attention, with the Mercedes Heritage Center providing nearly all of the required parts.

The current owner reports spending in excess of $30,000 to ensure that this 280 SE performs as well and as reliably as it looks. It also comes complete with an amazing assortment of original documents, including the window sticker, data cards, metal warranty plate, and a plastic envelope with a full complement of printed materials that were supplied with the car when new. It stands more-than-ready for many miles of open-air driving enjoyment.
