THIS CAR
Among the great automotive collaborations, much can be said about the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Both companies are synonymous with quality, performance, cutting-edge design, and their partnership is distinguished by technological innovation and motor sports superiority.
Only a truly significant car would tempt Mercedes-Benz to invoke the legendary SLR moniker, and its project with McLaren proved more than deserving. Thanks to the brute force of a supercharged AMG-tuned V-8 engine and the phenomenal ESP traction control, the SLR can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, and with its oversized brake calipers and carbon-ceramic rotors, it provides equally impressive stopping power.
The astounding performance of the SLR immediately captured the attention of the automotive world during initial test drives. An SLR lapped the Top Gear test track, for example, almost three seconds faster than the Lamborghini Murciélago, hitherto the fastest around the airfield course.
To highlight the engineering strengths of the SLR, Mercedes-Benz designed a strikingly aerodynamic body that took cues from contemporary Formula 1 cars and well-established classics. With its attention-demanding design and carbon-fiber construction, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was the ultimate representation of the classic front-engine, rear-drive GT.
The highly anticipated roadster edition of the SLR was introduced in September 2007, and this example was sold new to the consignor through Mercedes-Benz of New Orleans in April 2009. This essentially as-new Roadster, finished in Crystal Laurite Silver, has covered less than 2,000 miles and benefits from a full Mercedes-Benz service history. The original window sticker, which accompanies the sale along with a file of receipts, shows options including 19” asymmetric turbine wheels.
The beautifully designed interior features custom-sized carbon-fiber seats and lumbar support. Controls on the central console allow for selection of the three transmission settings and suspension set-up. A seven-speaker Bose sound system creates an immersive sonic experience beyond that of the engine.
Unequivocally, the SLR personifies the zeitgeist of Mercedes-Benz in the first decade of the 21st century. Revolutionary in chassis design through the use of carbon fiber, the SLR is a technical tour de force in the tradition of the C-111, yet its supercharged straight-line performance recalls the limit-pushing character of the prewar SSK. Despite its incredible capabilities, the open SLR was designed with usability and daily driving in mind. Its next caretaker will no doubt thoroughly enjoy being introduced to the new standard of excellence set by the magnificent SLR Roadster.
