PROVENANCE Wesley Robinson, West Hurley, New York (acquired in 1981) Malcolm Schneer (acquired in October 2003) Current Owner (acquired via Ferrari of Newport Beach) THIS CAR Featuring muscular Pininfarina-designed, Scaglietti-built bodywork, Ferrari’s 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer marked Ferrari’s challenge to the mid-engine Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Bora. With stylistic DNA rooted in Pininfarina’s 1968 P6 concept and first shown in prototype form at Torino in 1971, the production-ready 365 GT4 BB debuted at the 1973 Paris Salon with a 4.4-liter, flat-12 derived from the Scuderia’s 312 B GP cars. A blistering performer – even by today’s standards – the BB is historic as Ferrari’s first 12-cylinder, mid-engine road car. Already in production for several months, the 512 BB officially debuted at the 1976 Paris Salon. In addition to a displacement increase, greater compression, and dry sump lubrication, engine updates delivered peak power at lower engine revolutions. Body and chassis revisions included wider 9" rear wheels and Michelin XWX tires, subtly widened rear fenders, a slight increase in overall length, and enhanced engine-compartment airflow. Additional updates included a switch to four taillamps, four larger-diameter exhaust outlets, NACA-style rear cooling vents, and a lip-type front spoiler. Finished in black over tan leather upholstery with black-accented seat inserts, this 512 Berlinetta Boxer is one of 929 built in all, and it stands as one of the final Weber-carbureted examples of the 512 BB, being one of just 240 built for 1980. According to known history, it was imported to the US via Crepaldi of Milan in May 1981 and subsequently federalized, as confirmed by EPA and DOT releases and its door plaque. While the odometer currently shows approximately 35,000 miles, it was converted from the original metric unit to one calibrated in miles as part of the post-importation work performed. The first known American owner is Wesley Robinson of West Hurley, New York, who retained the BB until at least 1987. Southern California collector Malcolm Schneer acquired the Boxer in 2003 and commissioned a major service. During 2007, Carobu Engineering of Costa Mesa, California, lowered the ride height and added Koni adjustable shock absorbers. Mr. Schneer reported that he thoroughly enjoyed driving the BB following the handling upgrades. More recent attention included upgraded air-conditioning, fitment of a new clutch in 2012, and a 30,000-mile engine-out major service including timing belts and motor mounts in late 2013. The consignor acquired the Boxer in 2015. Set up for drivability and usability, this very attractive 1980 512 BB is offered complete with books, manuals, and tools. Available to be enjoyed with vigor, this later-production 512 BB from 1980 marks a highly important evolution in Ferrari’s legendary mid-engine, 12-cylinder lineage.
