As pre-1973 Porsche 911s have skyrocketed in value, many collectors and enthusiasts have started to look at the Porsches of the late 70’s to the late 80’s for fun affordable collectables. This 12-year period for Porsche was noted for making some of the most reliable and well-built cars they ever created…even to this day. I have countless clients who have gone 200k, 300k, even 400k miles on their original motors. They are built like tanks. Of all of these cars, the ones referred to as the “G50” cars are becoming the most desirable. From 1987 to mid 1989, Porsche stopped making their own transmissions and outsourced the job. The result was one of the most durable transmissions they had ever offered.
This Carrera was built in December of 1986 and sold by a local Southern California Porsche dealer. It was ordered with the following factory options:
Central locking system
Light metal forged alloy wheels (16x6 and 16x7 Fuchs)
Automatic heater control
Sport shock absorbers (Bilstein)
Sunroof
Blaupunkt radio (Reno)
Over the years, the car’s whole life was spent in Orange County. It was always garaged and enthusiast owned. It appears to have changed hands between friends and fellow local PCA members. The most current owner had the car for about decade/15k miles. He always serviced it at some of the top local independent Porsche specialists. It appears that nothing was over-looked.
Some recent/significant services and repairs include:
Clutch replaced approximately 12k miles ago
Fresh Bilstein struts/shocks all the way around
A/C system checked for leaks and recharged
Recent major service
New spark plugs, Bosch wires/distributor cap, and rotor
Valves adjusted
New rear wheel bearing
New Mahle air and oil filters
New fuel filter
New interior lights
New headlight bulbs
Oil service using Brad Penn oil
Mobile 1 Delvac transmission fluid flush
New shift bushings
All rubber suspension and steering parts checked and replaced as needed.
Flushed front oil cooler
Full alignment
New floor mats
New window trim felt/rubber
New wiper blades
New hood shocks
LoJack
Compression numbers are excellent w/ less than 7% discrepancy across all 6 cylinders
The condition of this 911 is superb considering the age and miles. It seriously looks as good as recent Carreras we’ve sold with fewer than half the miles. The paint is in excellent condition and all original except for the rear deck lid (replaced the later installed whale tale). Every panel verified with a paint meter (see pics). The glass is all original including the correct Sigla windscreen. The wheel lips were polished at one time, but the centers including the hand painted factory caps appear to be original. The tires have about a third life remaining but the brakes have well over half life left. The trim and lenses are original and in excellent condition.
The interior is remarkable. It looks surprisingly good and is original. The leather seats show minimal to no signs of use. The leather looks excellent. The door panels are near perfect with no excessive sagging of the door pockets. The dash is perfect with no cracks or warping. The carpet is original with no stains. The headliner looks great. There is just one slight tear towards the rear and hard to see. The original Blaupunkt radio was recently reinstalled. It powers up great, but the output channels don’t work and needs to be repaired. If the new owner wants to use the stock radio, we can help get it repaired. All the gauges function properly as well as all lights, clock, and air conditioning (recently recharged).
This Porsche drives amazingly well. It is so tight. It doesn’t smoke upon start up or running. It doesn’t leak oil. The steering is light and responsive. Shifting is quick and smooth. The power feels strong. It’s hard to believe this is a 30-year old car. It would make the perfect part-time daily driver, weekend holiday cruiser, or vintage event touring car.
California registration is paid through May of 2016.
This Carrera comes complete with recent records, owner’s manuals, extra key, factory wheel locks, jack, LoJack (new owner would have to transfer/pay for new service), original tool kit, car cover, and spare space saver tire.
