The ultimate 911. There is no more iconic silhouette than that of the early 911 and of all the variations and differences in these cars, the shape of the 2.7 RS with its Aerodynamic ducktail is the most instantly recognisable. It captured the imagination like the Jaguar E type had a decade before, and the initial run of 500 sold out almost immediately. Porsche had to reinstate production to build more – another 1,090, in fact – in order to meet demand.
RS stands for Rennsport in German, meaning "racing sport". The Carrera name was reintroduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950s. These sensational cars also achieved great success on the race track, RS both in touring and in lightweight spec were raced in almost every sports car race, the lightly modified RSR examples scored victories in the Targa Florio, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring all in their first year. Weighing in at only 975kg, 2.7 RS's have an impressive top speed of 150mph and performance figures of 0-65mph in just 5.8 seconds.
This factory Right Hand Drive UK supplied RS Touring is finished in its factory specification of Grand Prix White with Blue lettering, with matching colour coordinated wheels and a Black Leatherette interior. The Cassette deck is assumed to be original to the car and it is also fitted with factory options including a Heated Rear Window, Sports Seats (Left and Right), an Outside Mirror on the Driver's Side, Electric Sliding Roof and Electric Window Lifts. The car was completed in 1973 and the delivering dealer was noted to be Ian Anthony (Sales) Limited. The car had three owners before, in the mid-1980's, it was exported to New Zealand where it remained until this year. During its time in New Zealand, the car had just one owner from 1988 until 2015 and only two owners in total whilst abroad meaning it has had just five owners in total.
The car also underwent a 12 month restoration shortly after it was purchased by its previous owner in 1989/1990 and since then, the owner has been dedicated to keeping the car is superb condition, both mechanically and cosmetically. Additionally, this is a matching numbers example and the engine and gearbox are original to the car. The original 6"/7" Fuchs wheels have been replaced with 7"/8" wheels (although 6" wheels are supplied with the car). The original owner's manual is present, along with the incredibly rare, original Carrera RS supplement, spare key and Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche that confirms both the engine and gearbox numbers match.
A truly comprehensive history file accompanies the car, which includes numerous service invoices confirming that the car has been expertly maintained over many years whilst abroad. In November 2015 the car was sent to renowned Porsche specialist Jaz for a comprehensive, major "engine out" service, which included a front suspension rebuild, the fitting of new rear shocks and replacing the fuel tank amongst many other items, making this car in our opinion in need of nothing. The fantastically documented history and superb overall condition makes this 2.7 RS Touring a must for any serious collector or enthusiast. The car is currently available for viewing at our showroom just outside London.
