Porsche’s 1976 turbo coupe made an unmistakable impression with its whale tail rear spoiler and aggressively flared fenders. The public found the model attractive; Porsche exceeded sales expectations, even though the $25,800 price was almost double that of a 911 S. Of 1,157 examples built, approximately 500 came to the US. The cars were equipped with air-conditioning, leather interior, power windows, fog lights, and zinc anti-rust treatment. The inspiration for the 930 was Ernst Fuhrmann, who directed Valentin Schaeffer to prepare a turbo-charged 911 using Bosch K-Jetronic injection. The Porsche turbo was so heavily re-engineered from the 911 that it was given its own designation as the 930, reflecting the company’s experience with turbo-charging the 917 flat 12-cylinder racers. The 245 bhp, three-liter 930 engine was so flexible that Porsche opted for a wide-ratio four-speed instead of the 911’s five-speed gearbox. When it arrived in the US, the 930 turbo was among the fastest production cars on the market, posting 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds, a quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The 930 familiarized the performance world with the term “turbo lag.” Requiring a fine balance, enthusiastic drivers learned quickly not to go too fast into a corner and let off, or to stomp the throttle partway around a corner and get into the boost too early. In either case, the rear of the car would whip around with alarming alacrity. This 930, chassis 9306800143, spent its early years in long-term ownership in Florida and North Carolina. It is finished in the original combination of seldom-seen Ice Green Metallic paint with Cinnamon leather interior. The consignor believes that the mileage of 88,000 and all of the 930’s body panels are original to the car, which shows the benefit of having been carefully maintained throughout its life. The leather interior has been renewed, correct sun visors fitted, and the car carries an original Blaupunkt Bamberg stereo. Detail painting and replating has been attended to, and the car was mechanically refreshed by marque expert Jakob’s Porsche of North Vancouver, British Columbia. Invoices confirm that the refurbishment work has exceeded $22,000 (Canadian). The car comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, which indicates that it retains its original engine and gearbox. As with any thoroughbred, Porsche turbos demand skill from their operator to extract their highest levels of performance. The reward for such ability is a thrill like no other in the motoring world.
