Following the GT90 show car of 1995, the Ford GT concept debuted in 2002 in anticipation of Ford Motor Company’s centennial. Inspired by the GT40s that beat Ferrari on the international stage and won at Le Mans four years straight from 1966 through 1969, Ford’s newest GT represented more than a mere design throwback. In fact, the new GT was a true supercar the likes of which Detroit had never before produced, capable of awesome performance on every level. On top speed alone, the Ford GT eclipsed such contemporary exotics as Porsche’s Carrera GT and the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR. In tests at the Nürburgring’s famed Nordschleife circuit in Germany, the GT lapped quicker than many of the world’s best supercars. Powering the new GT was a mid-mounted, 32-valve 5.4-liter V-8 engine with a twin-screw supercharger mated to a six-speed rear transaxle and delivering 550 bhp. All-independent suspension and huge Brembo ventilated disc brakes rounded out the mechanical package. Featuring space-age materials and construction technologies, each GT was built in five distinct stages with initial assembly at Norwalk, Ohio’s Mayflower Vehicle Systems, paint by Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy, Michigan, engine assembly at Ford’s Romeo, Michigan, engine plant, and engine and transmission installation, plus interior finishing, at Ford’s Wixom, Michigan, plant. Interestingly, the Ford GT was the last vehicle project to be completed at Wixom. Only 4,038 examples were produced in all, with approximately 550, 1,900, and 1,600 built during 2004, 2005, and 2006 respectively. Predictably, demand far outstripped supply, with early cars selling for substantial premiums over the basic MSRP and prospective buyers vying for production slots. While capable of blistering performance, the GT was also remarkably tractable in everyday traffic, with a light clutch feel. The leather interior, which pays stylistic homage to the original GT40, featured passenger amenities including electric windows and air-conditioning. Unlike its predecessor, however, the new GT’s interior was spacious enough to accommodate taller drivers. This 2006 Ford GT was purchased new at Suntrup Ford of Kirkwood in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 12, 2007. Handsomely finished in Tungsten Grey Metallic with Ebony leather upholstery, the GT is further equipped with all four factory-available options, comprising the audiophile-quality McIntosh AM/FM/ CD stereo system ($4,000), lightweight forged aluminum wheels ($3,500), red-painted brake calipers ($750), and the Le Mans-style painted racing stripe package ($5,350). Accompanied by its original window sticker, owner’s manual, accessories, and AutoCheck and CARFAX vehicle history reports, this GT is one of the finest extant, presented with consistent service history, and less than 1,000 miles from new.
