Named in honor of Enzo Ferrari’s birthplace and styled by Pininfarina, the 360 Modena debuted for 1999, and it replaced the celebrated F355 as Ferrari’s mid-engine V-8 standard-bearer. Chassis development in collaboration with Alcoa yielded the Modena’s immensely strong aluminum space-frame chassis, and excellent aerodynamics resulted from thousands of hours of work in the wind tunnel. While somewhat larger than its predecessor, the 360 Modena weighed less and delivered shattering performance with its 3.6-liter, DOHC-per-bank V-8 engine sporting five valves per cylinder, 11:1 compression, and electronic fuel injection. Initially equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 360 Modena was soon available with an F1-derived unit with electro-hydraulic paddle controls on the steering wheel. The competition 360 Challenge variant was honed in the Ferrari Challenge International Championships and FIA GT events; knowledge gained in the crucible of racing directly influenced the 360 Challenge Stradale, essentially a road-legal racing car and the ultimate evolution of the 360 Modena series. As the highest-performance street-legal development, it featured Enzo-derived carbon-ceramic brakes, track-tuned underpinnings, aerodynamic tweaks, weight reduction, increased engine output (now 425 hp), and updated gearbox software. Other features included carbon-fiber rear-view mirrors, 19" Challenge wheels, Alcantara upholstery, and specific appearance features. While production figures vary by source quoted, approximately 1,274 to 1,288 of these stunning all-around performers were built in all for worldwide markets; of those, 378 were built for North American sale. Striking in its rare black paint finish and complemented by a red interior with lightweight competition-style seats, this 2004 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale was priced when new at $187,124. According to the original window sticker on file, this example’s very desirable extra-cost factory options included yellow brake calipers ($892), a fire extinguisher ($506), luggage ($3,674), a tri-color racing stripe ($5,479), and a stereo system with CD player ($1,934). Following completion and shipment to the US, the 360 Challenge Stradale was delivered new for sale to the Auto Gallery of Woodland Hills, California. Clearly benefiting from fastidious care and limited ownership, this 360 Challenge Stradale has covered just under 3,100 miles from new. Most recently, a major service was completed during December 2015, with records on file to confirm the work performed. In addition to a CARFAX report and original window sticker, this race-bred 360 Challenge Stradale is accompanied by the original owner’s manuals and supplements contained within their document pouch, plus the original car cover, seat covers, and tool kit. As offered, this beautifully presented 360 Challenge Stradale now stands ready to deliver equal measures of stunning performance and outstanding driving dynamics for an astute and enthusiastic new owner.
