By the late 1920s the trend for ever-heavier coachwork on the Rolls-Royce 20 HP had inevitably had a detrimental effect on performance. Rolls-Royce’s solution was to increase the comparatively small six cylinder engine’s capacity from just over three litres to 3,699cc which, together with a stronger crankshaft allowing increased rpm, raised its output to 25hp. The 20/25 became the most popular of all pre-war Rolls-Royces. This was with good reason the increased engine size over its predecessors provided the refined motoring expected of this period. It is still considered a delight to drive and remains a favourite among collectors.

Contemporary road tests commented on the exquisite precision of all the controls, one saying that the car behaved so beautifully that it was difficult to drive badly. Flexibility and braking were outstanding and the chassis proved surprisingly brisk, 0-50 taking approximately 20 seconds.

This example, first registered on December 29th 1930, GTR 30 is supplied with three large files of detailed ownership history, bills and receipts. Looking through the vast quantity of paper work, all if not most of the bills are included since the 1940s and even letters from the owner to the factory requesting work to be completed. Also included are two buff log books, old tax discs, numerous old MoT certificates and copies of the original build sheets as well as photographs of the comprehensive restoration. An interesting point is that GTR 30 was purchased in 1952 by Lt. Commander D Percy of HMS Osprey, the son of a great friend of Sir Henry Royce and remained in the Percy family until 1980.

From the paper work you can see the car has been well maintained throughout its life and the condition today is described as very good and drives well. Supplied with a new MoT certificate, a year’s road fund licence and V5 document, this elegant sporting Rolls-Royce is supplied with a phenomenal history file and will make a welcome addition to any collection.
