La renaissance de Bentley dans les années 1980 reposait essentiellement sur des modèles dont l'architecture de base était partagée avec d'autres modèles Rolls-Royce, mais au Salon de Genève en 1985, on pouvait admirer la maquette d'un coupé « Project 90 », destinée à tester la réaction du public à un modèle haute performance exclusivement Bentley. Quand le modèle définitif la Bentley Continental R fut dévoilé, six années plus tard, la foule se mit spontanément à applaudir. Dessiné avec l'assistance des consultants internationaux d'Automotive Design, la Continental R avait bénéficié d'une création assistée par ordinateur et de tests en soufflerie pour la mise au point de son élégante ligne aérodynamique. Malgré la nécessité d'intégrer des éléments moins traditionnels, comme les portières autoclaves, le résultat était bien dans le style de Bentley, mais revisité pour les années 1990. La boîte de vitesses était également nouvelle, une quatre rapports automatique avec un overdrive sur le dernier rapport, mais le principal intérêt résidait dans les performances de la nouvelle venue. Inutile de dire qu'elles étaient extraordinaires, la combinaison d'un moteur de Turbo R associé la carrosserie aérodynamique faisait descendre le 0 à 100 km/h à 6, 2 secondes et faisait grimper la vitesse maximale à plus de 240 km/h.

Le meilleur restait à venir avec la Continental T. Présentée en juin 1996, il s'agissait d'une version à empattement court de la Continental R, 10 cm de châssis ayant été supprimés au-delà des portes arrière. Avec 400 ch à sa disposition et perchée sur des roues de 18 pouces, la Continental T surbaissée avait l'inimitable allure sportive d'un pur sang Bentley, l'habitacle, avec son tableau de bord entièrement voué à la mécanique, rappelant les héroïques exploits des sportives de W. O. dans les années 1920. Le bouton de démarreur était un autre trait « rétro ». Bien que son poids fût égal celui de deux Ford Mondeo, la luxueuse Continental T était loin d'être un veau, abattant le 0 à 100 km/h en un temps de 5, 8 s, propre à arracher la gomme de ses pneus, avec une vitesse de pointe de 251 km/h. Tout aussi extraordinaire, son prix de 220 312 £, à l'époque de son lancement.

Cette Continental T n'a eu qu'un propriétaire depuis son origine, un gentleman driver et collectionneur de voitures classiques espagnol bien connu. Immatriculée au Royaume-Uni depuis novembre 2014, elle a parcouru 47 000 km depuis ses origines et sera vendu avec un historique complet de son entretien chez des agents et des spécialistes officiels Bentley. La voiture a été révisée pour la dernière fois il y a 500 km et est décrite par le vendeur comme en excellent état général. Vert foncé métallisé avec intérieur en cuir fauve, cette magnifique Bentley moderne est vendue avec son livret d'entretien et son manuel d'origine, ainsi que son MoT du Royaume-Uni (valable jusqu'au 14 décembre 2016).

Bentley's 1980s resurgence had hitherto relied exclusively on models whose basic architecture was shared with other Rolls-Royce products, but on display at Geneva in '85 was 'Project 90', a mocked-up coupé intended to gauge public response to the idea of a high-performance car unique to Bentley. When the real thing - the Bentley Continental R - was unveiled six years later, the waiting crowd burst into spontaneous applause. Styled with the assistance of consultants International Automotive Design, the Continental R benefited from computer-aided design and wind tunnel testing in the devising of its sleekly streamlined shape. Despite the need to incorporate non-traditional features such as doors recessed into the roof, the result looked every bit a Bentley, albeit one restated for the 1990s. Also new was the gearbox, a four-speed automatic with 'overdrive' top ratio, but the main focus of interest was the newcomer's performance. Needless to say, this was outstanding, the combination of the Turbo R engine in the new wind-cheating shape cutting the 0-60mph time to 6.2 seconds and boosting top speed to in excess of 150mph.

There was even more to come in the form of the Continental T. Introduced in June 1996, the latter was a short-wheelbase version of the Continental R, some 4" (100mm) being taken out of the chassis aft of the doors. With 400bhp at its disposal and crouching aggressively on 18" wheels, the low-slung Continental T looked every inch the thoroughbred Bentley sports car, the cockpit with its engine-turned dashboard recalling the heroic exploits of W O's 1920s racers. The engine start button was another neat 'retro' touch. Despite weighing as much as two Ford Mondeos, the luxuriously appointed Continental T was certainly no slouch, racing to 100km/h in a tyre-shredding 5.8 seconds on its way to a (governor limited) top speed of 251km/h. Equally eye-watering was the price: £220,312 at time of launch.

This Continental T has had only one registered owner from new: a noted classic car collector and gentleman racer in Spain. Registered in the UK since November 2014, it has covered 47,000 kilometres from new and comes with full service history with official Bentley agents and Bentley specialists. The car was last serviced some 500 kilometres ago and is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition. Finished in dark green metallic with tan hide interior, this beautiful modern Bentley is supplied with its original service book and manual, and comes with a UK MoT (valid until 14th December 2016).
