Since the mid-1950s, the Mercedes-Benz SL models have combined iconic styling with technical sophistication and breathtaking performance. From the brilliant 300SL and the stylish 190SL, the concept progressed through the “Pagoda” models of 1963-1971, and then the R107, which was produced for nearly 20 years. The fourth-generation SL, designated R129, arrived in 1990 and was initially available in two models: the six-cylinder 300SL, and the V8-powered 500 SL.

The new SL featured more modern, angular bodywork in direct contrast to the previous 560SL. A number of technical advancements improved high-speed control and stability, including electronically controlled dampers, triangular lower control arms with anti-dive geometry, and a multi-link rear axle. Passenger comfort was heightened with standard amenities including power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, and a power trunk release, as well as heated seats and leather upholstery. Safety enhancements included standard anti-lock brakes, air bags, and a revolutionary roll bar that rose automatically in the event of a rollover.

This 1990 500SL Roadster is a very fine representative, powered by a smooth 5.0-litre V8 engine with 32 valves, double overhead camshafts, and 322 horsepower. It displays an arresting silver finish and includes both hard and soft tops, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a history file with all paperwork, books, and invoices from new. This Canadian example is fully certified and emissions-tested, and stands ready today for many more years of enjoyment.
