Produced between 1990 and 2002, the Mercedes-Benz R129 models replaced the 560SL, representing a major technical and stylistic breakthrough. The new car was initially offered in two models, the six-cylinder 300SL, and the 500SL, which provided higher performance levels with a 322-horsepower V8 engine. Both engines featured the latest engineering features, including double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. An entirely new chassis was developed as well, which was slightly shorter than that of the 560SL, and the cars came standard with a power-operated convertible top, as well as a removable hard top. Safety features included anti-lock brakes, as well as an innovative foam-covered roll bar, which was capable of automatically deploying within 0.3 seconds of a rollover. Of course, the cars also provided top-level amenities and power features, providing comfort to match their legendary high-speed, long-distance touring capabilities.

This 1990 500SL Roadster is a very fine example that is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine mated to a standard four-speed automatic transmission. With just 84,000 kilometers, this 500SL displays a beautiful burgundy finish complemented by a charcoal leather interior, and it includes newer-style “eight-hole” alloy wheels, both hard and soft tops, and a history file with copies of service invoices. This Canadian example is fully certified, emissions-tested, and ready to transport its new owner with style, comfort, and high performance.
