In keeping with tradition, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class models were constantly upgraded and relentlessly improved over their 12-year production cycle, confirming the brilliance of their original design. Already renowned for superior driving dynamics and very high performance levels, the cars received a series of safety innovations during the mid-to-late 1990s, including the addition of side-impact airbags in 1996, and a front-seat occupant detection sensor in 1997. For 1998, the six-cylinder 320SL was discontinued, and only the V8-powered 500SL and the V12-powered 600SL models remained.

Solidly built and featuring legendary engineering and performance, the various SL models continued to impress road testers and Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts alike with handling levels that imparted a sense of confidence, in addition to impressive levels of comfort and luxury. Consumer Guide likened the V8-powered 500 SL to “… a runaway freight train” over 3,000 rpm with its strong acceleration, and the cars provided strong braking and handling to match. Best of all, unlike most other convertibles on the market, the solid basic structure of the SL provided a quieter top-down driving experience, especially on uneven pavement.

With very few peers today, this incredible 1998 500SL is equipped with the Sports Package originally valued at $8,700, as well as new-style 18-inch AMG wheels and both tops. Its offering represents a great opportunity to purchase a legendary performance car with all-weather touring capabilities and luxurious appointments.
