| The 220SE Convertible is a fuel-injected version of the 220S, built at the end of the production run, 1958 through 1960. About 1,100 examples were made.
The cars were fast and luxurious for their time, with the improved overhead-cam six giving 134 hp in this new version. They were also expensive. Built on a stationary assembly platform, the coupes and convertibles were possibly the last hand-assembled Mercedes production cars. The chrome trim, for example, was made of solid brass, hand-fitted to each car, then removed for plating. The wood trim presented the most lavish treatment in any Mercedes car, before or since. A properly-restored 220SE will cruise at highway speeds all day long., giving a level of comfort and reliability expected in contemporary cars. These are the finest tour cars we know of.
We purchased this 220SE from the first owner, Theodore Roosevelt, 111, in 1975, and sold it to its second owner that year. Since then, itÕs traveled about 24,000 miles and has had good care. We have the complete service history from Mr. Roosevelt and his successors. The original burled walnut trim is color faded but restorable. The paint shows wear, having been re-sprayed over 24 years ago. Some chrome trim is original and dull, and some has been replated.
The car is consigned to us by an owner who had us prepare the car for summer touring. The following work was done in Ô02: Leather restoration and redying, cocomats, tires, major service.
Recent sales of 220SE Convertibles have ranged from $38,000 to $210,000. This is an opportunity to acquire a documented original example in fully useable condition at a price on the low end of the scale. $55,000.
