Ferrari introduced a stunning new mid-engine replacement for its 365 GTB 4 Daytona in 1971, aimed squarely at the Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Bora. All new from the ground up, the low, wide and downright sensuous Pininfarina design was hand-built by Scaglietti and powered by a mid-mounted, 4.4-litre “boxer” twelve-cylinder engine. The new model was accordingly designated the 365 GT 4 BB and proclaimed “the fastest road car we’ve ever tested” by Road & Track. An instant legend, bonafide supercar and sensuous style icon, it remained in production through 1976 before being succeeded by the 512 BB.

The 365 GT 4 BB presented here was supplied new to Ferrari’s franchised dealer for Verona, Dino Ravasio; finished in Rosso Dino with the traditional and distinctive black Boxer trim and a Crema leather interior. Ravasio sold the car to its first owner, Teresa Barausse of Vicenza, who kept the car until 1981 before selling it to the second owner, avid collector Aldo Cudone of Padova. Eventually Cudone decided that he preferred the styling of his 512 BB with its colour-matching lower body section and therefore had the black Boxer trim removed when he had his 365 GT 4 BB repainted.

After Cudone’s passing in 1999, chassis no. 17927 was inherited by Clara Caverzan of Scorze and registered in her name in 2002. In December 2003 she sold it at auction with less than 43,000 kilometres to Hong Kong-based British collector Ian Wade. During Mr. Wade’s ownership the car was hardly used and in 2008 it was acquired by its current owner who had the car refinished with its classic black Boxer trim , thus returning the car to its striking original two-tone design. Although not visible in these photos, a new and correct six-pipe exhaust system has just been fitted and the car will have completed a thorough service at Eberlein Automobile of Kassel, Ferrari’s only official Ferrari Classiche partner in Germany. Chassis no. 17927 comes with its original warranty card, the original owner’s handbook, a 1974 directory of authorised sales and service partners and it is, of course, Ferrari Classiche certified.

With its six tail lights, six-pipe exhaust and six carburettors, the 365 GT 4 BB is by far the most desirable and distinctive car in the Boxer range, with chassis no. 17927 certainly being an outstanding example.
