Based on the SC-4 concept car first shown at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, the Strathcarron SC-5A was conceived as a highly sophisticated but affordable sports car that could also double as a track day car. Introduced at the following year’s Birmingham Motor Show, the all British machine, the brainchild of the late Lord Strathcarron, was spared nothing in its design. With a honeycomb monocoque chassis designed by Reynard, suspension developed by Prodrive and a Kevlar/carbon composite body, the SC-5A boasted all the right ingredients, topped off by a Triumph 1,200cc, twin camshaft, alloy, four cylinder motorcycle engine, sporting management and fuel injection systems developed by Ilmor, mated to a six speed Quaife sequential gearbox and limited slip differential. With a feather-like weight of just 1,213lb/550kg and 140bhp on tap, equivalent to well over 200bhp per ton, the diminutive machine could sprint from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and reach over 125mph, allied to race car levels of roadholding. Minimalist throughout, the Strathcarron was above all else fast and fun.

Launched in 2001 at the Autosport International Show, the SC-5 which followed was a more powerful, track-only, version of the SC-5A intended to form the basis of a one-make race series. Alas, later that year changes to the Single Vehicle Approval rules, designed to prevent motorcycle-engined cars circumventing emissions regulations, ultimately resulted in Strathcarron Sports Cars closing its doors, the company having been unable to complete re-engineering of its cars before the changes came into effect. From a planned production of 150 models a year, only 17 examples of the SC-5A had been produced, making the Strathcarron one of the rarest sports cars ever built.

Supplied to TVR dealer Henley Heritage as a demonstrator and first registered on March 1st 2002, this SC-5A has covered fewer than 1,100 miles since delivery. The fifteenth model produced, it also benefits from a SC-5 track car specification engine and rear wing and a gearbox with upgraded bearings, a weak point on early examples. Finished in black with black interior, it is offered in as new condition and comes complete with V5C registration document and a MoT test certificate valid for 12 months. A rare opportunity to acquire a highly individual British sports car that is equally effective on road or track.
