Few cars have captured a nation’s imagination more than the Ford Mustang did when it was introduced in 1964. The original pony car, the Mustang established itself as one of the cult cars of the Sixties, thanks in part to its numerous high-visibility roles in a number of Hollywood films. Available in convertible, notchback and fastback guise, with 2.8 or 3.3 litre straight six and 4.2 or 4.7 litre V8 engines, it was to prove one of Ford’s greatest ever sellers. In fact, the Mustang had the most successful car launch in automobile history, selling, in its first eighteen months, more than one million cars.

If the Mustang was a popular car before, then the 1968 Steve McQueen film Bullet turned it into an overnight legend. In one of the most spectacular car chases ever seen in a motion picture, Steve McQueen’s maverick cop wowed audiences as he pursued two hit men in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco. The resulting scene promptly became an unforgettable part of cinematic history, and cemented the Mustang in the public consciousness in a way which no other car had ever managed, save perhaps for the Aston Martin DB5’s appearance in Goldfinger four years earlier.

From June 1964, the famous 271 hp 289 V-8 was available to Ford customers. This motor made the Mustang a joy to drive and included a special handling package (stiffer springs, shocks and front stabilizer bar) and the 14 inch Red Band tires. Axle ratio choice was limited to 3.89 or 4.11:1. Incidentally, the special handling package was only available on the 289 V8 powered Mustangs. All 289 Mustangs also came with the larger nine inch rear axle ring gear, as opposed to the smaller eight inch unit.

Made in San Jose on July 30th 1968, this car was imported from Virginia to the UK in the autumn of 2006 by the current owner and converted by specialists SVA in Essex . The previous owner kept the car in the garage at all times since 1988 and is reported to be in good condition. Since landing on these shores the vendor has replaced the front and rear brakes and pipes, transmission hoses, alternator and battery.

Finished in Wimbledon white we are informed by the vendor that this Mustang is very clean, runs well, and starts every time with great oil pressure. The red interior is described as being like new with the deluxe interior featuring the rare ceiling console. Air conditioning and power steering are welcome creature comforts.

The engine is a rebuilt 302 V8 unit feeding power through an automatic transmission. The car sits on American Racing wheels with other features including a dual exhaust, point-less ignition, original blue snorkel air intake, key-less entry, high-end alarm, Kenwood cassette/radio with 3 amplifiers and two sub-woofers.

Supplied with a V5 document and import documentation records this iconic symbol of American motoring is offered at an extremely reasonable price with the vendor hoping to have a new MoT certificate issued prior to the sale.
