When Ford introduced the Mustang for the 1965 model year, its runaway success exceeded all expectations. It was the car for the moment and it sold more in its first styling phase (1965-66) than it ever would again. It tended to be revised every couple of years and with every up-date the weight increased and production fell.

It was the original concept which the public liked, and when most people think of a Mustang they still think of the 1965/6 fastback coupé, although it actually sold only a fraction of the numbers which the notchback version did. The reason is simple: all the Shelby versions were fastbacks and it is the Shelby car that catches the imagination. Nearly 1,300,000 Mustangs were sold in the first two years but only 2,040 cars passed through the hands of Carroll Shelby.

The lucky few which did come away with increased power (306bhp @ 6,000rpm) and torque (320lb.ft @ 4,200rpm) had wider wheels, uprated brakes, Koni shock absorbers, a new front anti-roll bar, rear radius rod, revised steering and a limited slip differential. It was the sort of thorough, practical, thinking one would associate with Carroll Shelby and his collaborator on the project, Ken Miles, another superb driver/engineer. With the mechanical transformation went a fibreglass bonnet (with an air scoop which, most unusually, actually worked) and cosmetic touches such as a revised front grille and distinctive livery.

Presented in the original colour combination of Raven Black with black leather interior, this Shelby GT350 is 1 of 158 ever produced. In fact, Carrol Shelby himself drives the identical car and colour. Imported from the USA in 1984, it was subject to a full restoration in the 1980’s using only NOS (new old stock) parts and is supplied with a full photographic folder demonstrating the work carried out.

Manufactured in 1968, this car, as all Shelby’s did, left the factory without the famous racing stripes that is so often associated with its racing pedigree. The stripes were a dealer option and surprisingly this example escaped the stripes and has been kept that way ever since.

Registered in the ‘Shelby World Registry, this car comes complete with an exemplary history file, Full Marti Report, MOT and V5 registration document. Described as in highly original condition, this Mustang is a rare matching numbers example that would make a fine addition to any collection.
