1973 ROVER 3500S SERIES II MANUAL

Car and Driver were somehow ahead of the man in the street when they called the 2000TC an automotive milestone as even greater accolades were about to come for the new P6 V8 3500. This exciting new model was strangely branded the Three Thousand Five to avoid confusion with the P5 3.5-litre that remained in production until 1973. The engine, Buick based, was borrowed from the earlier Rover P5.

 

This new tour-de-force shared the same body and features of the smaller- engined 2000 P6 saloon as well as the de Dion rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The 3500 only being available with an automatic transmission until 1971 until the four-speed manual 3500S model was released, used the letter "S" to denote Synchromesh. Noticeably quicker than the automatic model, the manual was able to achieve 0-60 mph in 9 secs, compared to 10.1secs for the automatic car. The gearbox was a modified version of the Rover 2000 and 2200 models to handle the additional torque. The Rover 3500 & 3500 S were both discontinued in June, 1976.

 

Interestingly, Rover 3500’s were assembled in New Zealand from 1971 to 1976, at the New Zealand Motor Corp’s assembly plant in Stoke, Nelson, alongside the Triumph 2000/2500, Jaguar XJ6 (Series 1 and 2) and Land Rover (Series 3). Furthermore, the Rover 3500 was an export car for New Zealand as 2,400 were shipped to Australia in return for Leyland P76 CKD kits.

 

This desirable car has the full specifications offered with the later released models. With a 4 speed manual gearbox, 3.5-litres of V8 power, twin SU carburettors and all wheel disc brakes, this car is purported to be tuned for performance similar to the cars used by the UK Police force in the 1970’s.

 

Painted in factory Rover Scarab blue with black fabric roof complimented by a rich tan interior and smart beige carpets, this car comes with a definitive rumbling V8 note. An interesting hi-performance break- away from the typical Rovers in the Savage Collection, this is a most desirable car that brings together the attributes Rover is famous for while celebrating its motor sporting pedigree at the same time.

 

Well presented, regularly serviced and a prized item in the Savage stable of Rovers with a mileage reading of a mere 6,841miles, this car is considered a highly desirable purchase. The provenance of this car is being sought at the time of print.
