PROVENANCE Mr. E. Garcia, Jacksonville, Florida (acquired in 1979) Dr. Albert C. Weihl, Madison, Connecticut (acquired in 1987) Skeets Dunn, Rancho Sante Fe, California (acquired in July 2011) Symbolic Motorcars, La Jolla, California (acquired from the above in September 2011) Continental Autosports, Hinsdale, Illinois (acquired from the above in 2012) Private Collection, Los Angeles, California (acquired from the above in 2014) Current Owner (acquired from the above) THIS CAR The Dino was Ferrari’s first mid-engined V-6-powered model. Production was brisk, especially for Ferrari, tallying 2,295 GTs and 1,274 GTS examples built between 1968 and 1974. This 1972 Dino 246 GT is a European-specification vehicle that was later imported to the US. Boasting significant restoration work, chassis 03978, originally finished in Azzurro Dino, now sports a vibrant Giallo Fly (Fly Yellow) livery over a Nero (Black) interior. Although the details of the Dino’s early European ownership are not known, Denny Schue’s Dino Register states that on September 5, 1979, the car was imported by Mr. E. Garcia through Jacksonville, Florida, and was converted to comply with US DOT and EPA regulations at the time. By June 1987, the Dino was repainted yellow. That year, the sports car made the move to Southern California, where it was offered for sale. Dr. Albert C. Weihl of Madison, Connecticut, purchased the Dino in 1987, when it displayed 37,275 km. When 03978 was next purchased in July 201 1 by Skeets Dunn of California, the car still showed approximately 40,000 km, suggesting less than 3,000 km of use over a nearly 24-year stretch. Symbolic Motorcars in La Jolla, California, acquired this striking Dino in September 201 1. Symbolic conducted a sympathetic refurbishment, soliciting input from the Dino community and sourcing correct parts for an optimally authentic car. Among other mechanical measures, thesuspension was completely rebuilt. Offered by Symbolic in February 2012, the Dino was spotted and snapped up by Continental Autosports. Continental’s service department immediately evaluated the Dino. Some minor mechanical issues required attention, as did certain cosmetic elements, including the interior. Continental Autosports’ service department spent considerable time and attention in the effort of perfecting the Dino’s presentation. In 2014, the Dino was sold to a Los Angeles-based collector, who sold it to the consignor in 2015. In the time since, this Dino has been serviced by Fast Cars Ltd. of Redondo Beach, California. Ideal for a multitude of driving and show events, 03978 is certain to be appreciated for its strong visual presentation and dynamic performance.
