The Baja Boot was envisioned by Vic Hickey who was regarded as one of General Motors top engineers of the time. GM had a “no racing” policy in place that initially stopped any plans of producing the Baja. But under the shadow of darkness, Hickey and Drino Miller completed the Baja Boot in 26 days at the Hurst facility in Michigan. The chassis was constructed out of SAE- 1010 13/4-inch steel tubing that weighed 3,450 pounds. The suspension system included parts from a Corvette rear drive assemblies and a Dana transfer case to support the 112 inch long hybrid four-wheel-drive buggy. The Baja Boot could operate from a Front wheel drive platform through an inverted drive assembly that allowed the driver to disengage the transfer case. Innovative features included a collapsible steering column, 11-inch Hurst-Airheart disc brakes, a 20-inch-diameter six-blade fan with reversed pitch, and a 350ci V-8 engine that was installed backwards.

In 1968, Steve McQueen’s and his Baja boot competed at the Stardust 7-11 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. Matt Store, the author of McQueen’s Machines quoted the actor as saying, “We were really battin’ along, feeling good about the car and our chances with it, when we see this big fat wheel rolling along beside us!” The wheel that had once been attached to the Baja Boot had been separated and found its way rolling away in the desert ending any possibility of winning the event.

In 1969 the Baja made its way across the southern boarder for the Baja 1000. It is the longest, toughest and most dangerous road race in the world. The race was run with co-driver Harold Daign in Mexico’s Baja CaliforniaPeninsula, also known as ‘The Devils Playground’. After a Valiant effort, the duo fell short of completing the race due to a part going out in the transmission.

This Baja Boot is one of only 2 ever made, with the second boot belonging to a private collection in Europe. This Boot underwent a four year, documented ground up restoration by Ryan Falconer Racing Engines after the previous owner purchased the car in 1996. It was brought back to its 1968 configuration, with proper Hurst decals, correct red paint and is equipped with the “Baja Bucket” seat designed and patented by Steve McQueen to reduce injuries in roll over accidents. Baja 1 was a part of the PetersonMuseum’s Tecate Score 2000, inductee to the Baja 500 Hall of Fame, and participated in the “40 years to Glory” celebration at Long Beach, California.
