Known History

This Voisin C18 V12 might be the last of the breed. It has a unique body and is one of three cars that were completed. Its coach-coupe body was made around 1938, during the « aerodynamic » era. Our C18 is rather similar to the C30S, but it looks more elegant: the front grill has a more coherent position and reminds us of the Bugatti Type 57 bodied by Gangloff. This particular Voisin would have been bodied by François SALIOT in Levallois Perret as we notice some similarities with some of his creations: The front end and the vents on the bonnet are very similar to the Voisin C15 roadster. The interior is typical of the brand, with a sporty aircraft inspired dashboard; the gearbox lever is gorgeous. It also features light seats and the sliding windows are a true jeweller’s craft.

M. L.B., an enthusiast jeweller acquired chassis 40033 around 1938. According to his heir, he entrusted SALIOT to craft the body. The owner then ordered some modification probably inspired by the then new C30S on the back of the car. His coachbuilder in Bayeux made these modifications. M. L.B. was an injured veteran of WW1; therefore his son was driving this Voisin. He stored the car during WW2 and kept it until he passed away in 1958. Alexis DREYE acquired this C18 the same year, and the car broke down after he drove 20 kilometres.

Our Voisin was then stored for many years; the dossier includes many letters between Alexis DREYE and Gabriel VOISIN debating about the car at this time. Around 1975, Alexis DREYE had the engine restored and the paintwork was renewed. Today the odometer reads only 2 700 kilometres that, we believe, is original as the car remained sitting most of its existence: at the coach-builder workshop, during WW2, during its storage until the first owner passed away, and before Alexis DREYE restored it. After the restoration was completed, Alexis DREYE barely used this car that was brought on a trailer every time it appeared in exhibitions.

This car is absolutely stunning. It is a testimony of Gabriel Voisin’s genius, property of two important gentlemen. This Voisin is almost brand new!

Since 2000, Avions Voisin has been awarded two « Best of Show » at the Pebble Beach Concourse of Elegance. Only Delage and Mercedes were able to match this score.
