Designed by Bob van Niekerk as a GT following his own and other drivers racing successes with his GSM Dart/Delta sports car, the Flamingo coupe is powered by a Ford 4 cylinder Kent engine which sits in a strong tubular chassis. As it weighs in at only 1600 pounds it has a good power to weight ratio which gives it strong performance. In addition it handles well with light but positive steering and a firm but comfortable ride. Van Niekerk, as well as being a talented race/road car designer also had a flair for designing cars which look attractive as can been seen in the stylish appearance of the Flamingo. The quality and finish of the fibreglass body shell is much better than most I have seen and this particular car benefits from a really good paint job. It is neatly finished inside with comfortable seats, good trim and easy to read instruments. All in all it is a well put together, very nimble and superbly maintained car which inspires confidence on the road. It will also be easy to use and comes complete with a full parts list!
This particular example is being sold on behalf of Formula One designer Gordon Murray.
He was responsible not only for the Brabham which gave Nelson Piquet his F1 Driver’s Championship, he also designed Ayrton Senna’s Championship winning cars and his designs also provided Alain Prost his Championship cars. He also designed the McLarenF1 road car, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the Rocket roadster.
All I can say is if this GSM Flamingo is good enough for Gordon Murray then it is certainly good enough for me!
