The Ferrari 365 GTB/4:

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ has it all, dazzling speed, monumental power, and an impossibly long bonnet, everything one could want from a GT! It was the fastest production car of its day (retaining that title until the 365 GT4 BB was offered), with Ferrari claiming a top speed of 280 km/h and over 350 bhp at 7,500 rpm … a true powerhouse whether cruising the continent, or racing from New York City to Redondo Beach to win the famed Cannonball!

This is the final ‘classic-era’ front-engined V12 Ferrari built under the guidance of the legendary Enzo Ferrari. This is his ultimate vision of the 1970’s GT car, a 4.4 litre V12, fed by six Weber carburettors, being driven through a five-speed manual transaxle, cloaked in bodywork designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, a true masterpiece.

This time-warp Ferrari Daytona:

This Ferrari 365 GTB/4 was assembled in Maranello in August 1972, finished in Rosso Chiaro Ferrari with a Pelle Beige interior. In March 1973, Robert B.Puleston of Rhode Island ordered this Daytona through Luigi Chinetti Motors Inc with the purchase contract totalling $25,500.

On 16th April 1973, Ferrari issued chassis 16221’s Certificato d’Origine, number 9522 before delivering the car that same month to Chinetti Garthwaite Imports. Robert Puleston took ownership in early June with the State of Rhode Island Registration card being issued on 13th. This Daytona’s history file is very impressive, even in these early years, containing copies of many very important documents including the Certificato d’Origine, sales invoice, manufacturers statement of origin to a motor vehicle, and correspondence between Robert Puleston and John Baus at Luigi Chinetti Motors. It is also very important to note that this car still retains its original owner’s manuals and pouch, warranty card and additional instructions for the USA version supplement.

We can see from the cars history file that Mr Puleston kept many of the cars service invoices and Rhode Island Registration cards, as well as a period photo of the car on his driveway! By 1980 this car had covered only 14,587 miles, as noted on a maintenance invoice from Chinetti International Motors and in 1990.

Mr Puleston kept ownership of this Daytona for over 25 years, carefully recording its maintenance and clearly enjoying his time with it. The second owner was Mr John E Lyons, also from Rhode Island, who in late-2005 embarked upon a complete engine rebuild, costing in excess of $50,000, at this point the car was noted as having covered 25,510 miles. In July 2007, having covered a further 268 miles, John returned the car for a ‘Post motor rebuild oil service’. Since this comprehensive engine rebuild, the car has covered less than 2,000 miles!

The current owner bought this car through auction in October 2012, bringing the car to Europe where it is currently UK registered. By late 2015, this Ferrari Daytona had been inspected by Ferrari, and received its red-book Ferrari Classiche Certification, confirming it to be an entirely ‘matching-numbers’ example, retaining its original chassis, engine and transaxle.

This is a Daytona like no other, still wearing its original paint and interior from 1972, it offers an opportunity to own a Ferrari, the way Ferrari built it. It has not been restored, it has all its original charm, it is a magnificent example of Enzo Ferrari’s vision. Even more impressive when we consider it still retains its original owner’s manual, warranty card, pouch and toolkit, along with an impressively detailed history file!

In preparation of bringing this very special Ferrari to the market, we have extensively detailed it, whilst also having the paintwork professionally inspected, confirming it to be all original, apart from one very small section on the rear left wing, just below the rear quarter window.

As they say, a car can only be original once, and considering this Daytona is already 45 years old, there is a rapidly decreasing number of truly original cars remaining. Cars which have never been fully disassembled since leaving the Maranello factory are the holy grail, to own such a car is a true enthusiasts dream, here is such an opportunity!
