To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Amelia Island event, 10 March 2018.
Just a couple of years after Porsche began to phase out its 356 in favor of the all-new 911, an eagerly awaited higher-performance variant debuted. The 911 S arrived late in 1966 with a host of engine modifications that boosted power output from 130 to 160 hp. Beefier ventilated disc brakes were also part of the package, tucked behind newly designed Fuchs alloy wheels. The S laid the framework for high-performance Porsches to come and was well received by both media and buyers alike for its eminent drivability.

The life of this 911 began on 31 October 1966, making it among the first S coupes built. Swathed in Light Ivory over black leatherette trim, it was delivered new to P.C. Southwest in San Antonio, Texas. It was acquired new by Dr. T.C. Ford, MD, of Breckenridge, Texas, who owned the car until 2009, though he had taken it off the road in 1981. It was then owned by James D. Rogers Jr. of Humble, Texas, from whom the consignor acquired it several years ago. That period of dormancy helped preserve it in highly original condition, including its original floor, fenders, and body panels.

Noted Porsche experts at Apex Auto Body in Denver recently completed the restoration of this 911 to its original specification. The work included rebuilding the brakes, shock absorbers, and suspension, amongst other things, to factory standard. The Porsche even rides on its original, date-coded, 1967 model year-only 4.5-in. Fuchs alloy wheels, which were expertly refinished by noted authority Harvey Weidman. The 911 S displays excellent panel fit and its chrome surfaces boast a mirror finish, reflected perfectly in the exceptional paint. Inside, the car is striking with new black vinyl in the correct pattern and finish, along with new black carpeting. Amenities include a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio and a fully functional Webasto heater tucked under the front hood. At the rear, its original, numbers-matching 2.0-liter flat-six engine and five-speed transmission was rebuilt by Brad Berry in Denver. The solitary modification is the stainless-steel headers, which run more efficiently and are less prone to corrosion over the original units.

The 911 S has been driven less than 100 miles since its restoration was completed. The consignor notes that it is regularly started and maintained to the highest standards to ensure everything remains in proper working order and that it drives like a brand-new 911 S should. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a copy of the factory Kardex will be included with the sale, along with the owner’s manual, tool kit, and jack. It has not been shown since its restoration and would certainly be the star of any Porsche gathering.
