To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' Amelia Island event, 10 March 2018.
The original Porsche Turbo Carrera turned the automotive universe on its ear on its introduction in 1974, and placed the German automaker squarely among the leaders of the supercar fraternity. In 1991, a second-generation Turbo arrived, packaged in a svelte Type 964 shell, and it too was a world-shaker. Unlike many exotics, the Turbo 3.3 could be driven on urban streets with a minimum of fuss, but given a straight piece of pavement and no legal interference, it was capable of near 170-mph performance.

Porsche's 964 was improved in nearly every aspect from the preceding Carrera 3.2. Porsche claimed that some 87 percent of its parts were all new, including the reshaped nose and tail, now fitted with smoothly molded thermoplastic bumper covers. The front suspension was new as well; the traditional torsion bars were upgraded to coil springs and shocks. The rear suspension retained Porsche's trailing arms and torsion bars. Brakes, of course, remained among the best in the world, with large cross-drilled and ventilated rotors all around. The floor pan was revised to accept a new all-wheel-drive system developed in the 959 and 961, but the 964's high-performance versions, including the Turbo, were all rear-wheel drive.

The 964 Turbo's M30/69 engine displaced 3,299 cc and produced 320 hp at 5,750 rpm thanks to a larger intercooler that dropped the temperature of the intake air and improved volumetric efficiency. This engine used stainless-steel head gaskets for improved durability and sealing, a revised ignition system, and metallic catalyst in the exhaust system. The new and improved motor turned the Porsche Turbo 3.3 into the world's fastest-accelerating production car, bar none. Car & Driver declared the Turbo 3.3 "a rocketship" that could hit 60 miles an hour from a standstill in just over four seconds and fly through the quarter mile in the 12s at 108 mph.

This elegant and powerful Type 964 Turbo was completed on 21 June 1991, among the last in a series of 674 M-program units for the U.S. market. According to its Certificate of Authenticity, it was ordered in Paint-to-Sample Ferrari Yellow (Fly Yellow, per Ferrari) at considerable extra cost and trimmed in black partial leather. A modest list of optional equipment was specified, including an electric sunroof, a limited-slip differential described by Car & Driver as innovative, in that it "not only improves driving traction, but can lock up under simultaneously braking and cornering to improve stability." There was also air conditioning, a stereo system, and additional lumbar support for the driver's seat.

The consignor purchased this car from a Virginia dealer in 2011 with fewer than 11,000 miles from new, adding it to his large collection of exceptional Porsches. He notes that it has been properly maintained and driven about 30 miles a year to ensure that all systems are in proper working order.

This fine Turbo presents as nearly new and in excellent condition throughout; recently serviced, it is supplied with its correct owner's manual and warranty booklet, a perfect, unused tool roll, collapsible spare, jack, and inflator, and a set of "Turbo"-embroidered floor mats.
