The original Porsche 911 with its famous, distinctive and durable design was introduced in the autumn of 1963 and built until 1989. Mechanically, it was notable for being rear-engined and air-cooled. From its inception, the 911 was modified both by private racing teams and the Porsche factory itself for racing, rallying and other automotive competitions. The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included, namely the powerful 911-derived 935 which won Le Mans as well as other major sports cars races. In 1967 Porsche introduced the 911T model and subsequently a 911E version, however, the 911S was the most desirable and with only 3,174 Porsche 911S’s manufactured from 1969-1971, good quality surviving examples are rare and highly sought after.
Purchased in 2003, this Porsche appeared to be in reasonable condition having had a reasonable amount of work carried out on her prior to the purchase. However the fastidious vendor intended to keep this 911 for a number of years and set about a complete restoration. The engine had previously been rebuilt and after close inspection, it was decided the rebuild had been carried out to a good standard and was left untouched. He commissioned Sportwagon to do the bodywork although he had to wait a significant amount of time due to a ‘full order book’. Fabrication work was carried out to the highest of standards, with a number of panels replaced and a superb paint finish applied. An extensive collection of photographs confirms the quality and comprehensive nature of the work completed by Sportwagon. Mechanics were taken care of by Porsche specialist JAZ with considerable care and attention paid to using factory parts wherever possible ensuring the end result being a fully rebuilt 911 2.4 S of the highest quality. A significant history folder confirms the full extent of the restoration with invoices totalling of £35,000 in labour costs alone plus a huge list of parts. This righthand drive example was originally supplied on 8th November 1971 and is surely one of the best examples available anywhere today. With a restoration project now taking some three years to complete and costing circa £150,000, this museum quality Porsche is an opportunity to beat the queue and enjoy such a splendid example immediately.]]
