Known History

This car bears the name - Continental - that is the stuff of dreams and transforms a Bentley into an exceptional automobile. It first appeared in 1952 on the Continental R coupé, a model that was geared towards wealthy Brits and enthusiasts of long distance touring on the continent. It was a high-class motor car that provided an outstanding combination of luxury and power. Not only was the Continental the fastest four-seater coupé in the world, capable of reaching the famed limit of 120 mph, but it also held a record sale price - at 7,800,000 francs, it was worth eight DS Citroëns !

The appearance in 1955 of the Bentley Type S was followed a few months later by the Continental version, in which the six-cylinder engine had been increased to 4.9-litres. It offered a remarkably smooth ride and sufficient power to ensure a top speed well above most other touring cars. The Park Ward coachwork was luxuriously appointed and the car ran silently, giving an impression of gliding effortlessly along the road.

The Continental coupé Park Ward on offer is rare for being one of only 33 left-hand drive examples built. It was ordered by the first owner, H-G Day, an American businessman, and was delivered to him during 1957, with the British registration SYX 961. He used the car for a while in England, before taking it back to Palo Alto, in California, south of San Francisco. He kept the Bentley until his death in 1994, when it passed to his nephew, in Southern California. Shortly afterwards, this stunning S1 was the subject of a bare metal restoration, which provided the opportunity for a change of colour. The light brown was replaced by dark green. The leather upholstery on the front seats was replaced at the same time, and the work was of such a high standard that it is not distinguishable from the original. Other elements, such as the door panels, rear bench seat and armrests were not touched, as they remained in lovely original condition.

In 2011, this car was sent to the Bentley representative in Beverly Hills for some mechanical work, which included overhauling the carburettors.

The car is presented today to a very high standard, with immaculate bodywork and exceptionally well-preserved interior, complete with all its luxury equipment. This is not surprising, given that the car has been in the same family ownership almost from new. Accompanied by its service book and the original toolkit, this car is emblematic of Bentley's tradition for quality that produced cars with a discreet opulence and the performance of a sports car.
