Known History

Alejandro de Tomaso started his racing career in Argentina before driving in Italy for Maserati and Osca. In 1959 he established a business building race cars. After producing various prototypes, his first road car, the Vallelunga, appeared in 1964. This was a sporty barchetta, and was followed by a coupé version in 1965. With a body designed by Fissore, the first three prototypes in aluminium had a sloping rear. The subsequent fibreglass examples came with a more traditional rear windscreen. The car's bold design evolved from experience gained in competition. It was only the second production car with a mid-engine set-up, after the ATS, and had a complex chassis with Formula 3 inspired suspension that was both light and rigid. The car was equipped with the reliable Ford Kent 1.5-litre engine.

In spite of its sporty characteristics, the Vallelunga was not a commercial success. With a price tag of 3,5 million lira, the same as a Lancia Flaminia Zagato, and over half that of a Ferrari berlinetta, only the fifty or so examples that Fissore and Ghia had agreed to produce, were built. Colonel Ronnie Hoare, the British Ferrari importer, proposed fitting a more powerful Lotus twin-cam 1600 cc 135 bhp engine with a five-speed gear-box. As soon as the first Vallelunga examples appeared, the twin-cam option was offered by the factory on demand, and appeared in the sales brochures showcasing the model in competition. Press articles were cautious about the prototype, but test-drive features on the production version, such as the piece by José Rosinski in Sport Auto reported excellent road handling.

 

Only around twenty of these cars survive today, all slightly different. The car on offer is chassis VLD 1611 (D for "destra"), a 'competition' version with twin-cam engine, twin Weber DCOE40 carburettors and a five-speed gearbox. It was the subject of a feature in Autosport in November 1965, when the car paid a visit to Maranello Concessionaires, in England. It was later sold to driver Robs Lamplough, before being sold to Australia, where is remained until 2014. During this period, it belonged to Fred Vogel, before being raced by Andrew Osmon and Peter Bell. Restored in Australia at the end of the 2000s and then acquired by Sam Calabro, it was regularly maintained.

The car was given EU customs clearance when it returned to Europe. The current owner has spent around 7 000 € re-commissioning the car (refurbishing the expansion tank, repairing the electrics to the central console, refurbishing brake and clutch master cylinder, and bleeding the brake and clutch hydraulic systems…). The registration documents, log book, maintenance invoices, a file of photos, copy of the sales brochure and extensive information about the model will be passed on to the buyer.

An opportunity to drive the car allowed us to discover how agile the Vallelunga is at high speeds. Powered by a lively and robust engine and benefitting from a lightweight, well-balanced chassis, the car handles beautifully. This highly original and very rare car is the perfect personification of the 1960s Italian sporting culture.
