The first 'S-class' Mercedes-Benz arrived in 1968 in the form of the 280 S and 280 SE, which were large comfortable sports saloons offering powerful touring capabilities and luxurious interiors with space to seat five occupants. Known as the W108/109 models, they were constructed on 108" wheelbase and the new S-Class Saloons were much heavier than earlier models. The styling was updated using a thoroughly modern design featuring the attractive stacked layout of the headlights which was popular during the period. Although the 280 was usually powered by a 2.8 litre straight six engine Mercedes-Benz, rather confusingly, added a V8 engined 280 SE to the model range. The 280 SE 3.5 had a 3.5 litre, V8 engine and came with both automatic and manual transmission and power steering. These saloons were well equipped and extremely powerful. The 280 SE 3.5 reached a top-speed of 125mph and offered effortless high speed cruising mated with supple ride comfort. Between 1971 and 1972, Mercedes-Benz produced 11,309 examples and they have always been popular with collectors and enthusiasts alike.
This two-owner matching numbers car has been the subject of a very recent article in the March 2017 edition of Mercedes Enthusiast Club magazine. Presented in Mercedes light green with mid tan leatherette, this genuine righthand drive example was built under licence in South Africa by Mercedes-Benz and has only covered 19,106 miles. The car benefits from a very rare manual four-speed gearbox and power steering, it has never been restored and ástill shows all the original paint work and interior. When new, South African examples were commonly fitted with stone shields to protect various mechanical parts under the vehicle, i.e. fuel tank, fuel pump, prop-shaft, gearbox and engine, and these are still in place. áThe car comes complete with an extensive history file including the Mercedes-Benz service book, dealer network book, protection booklet, mileage book and the original spare key with the unused grey fob, all of this is contained within the original tan plastic wallet. The vendor advises that the car has been dry stored since being imported in 1999 and was UK registered in 2016.á This example has been subject to recent recommissioning that included four new tyres, a new exhaust and all the fluids replaced. A new MoT test certificate with no advisories was obtained and the vendor describes it as driving very well. This is a truly wonderful classic Mercedes-Benz offering practicality and elegance.]]
