Launched in November 1951, the type (W186) 300 Cabriolet D was built on an older chassis that was fitted with a newer straight-6 3.0L engine with an increased power output. Despite the body work, the type D was a fairly large vehicle that provided comfortable seating for up to six passengers. Among the various technological improvements that made their way under the car's hood, the most notable must have been the load-levelling suspension which could be activated/deactivated through a simple dashboard-mounted switch.

The spectacular example we are proud to offer today has incredibly remained in the hands of its first owners (a noble family from the Veneto region of Italy) since new.

At a time when travel by road was scarce and travelling by road abroad even less so this Mercedes 300 D convertible must have created quite a stir whilst touring the roads of Europe in the 1950s! The trailer was built by a local artisan and was designed to carry the family's holiday luggage and the Countess can clearly remember regular visits to Scotland.

The family travelled extensively throughout Europe and their chauffeur, now 99 years old, was invited specially to the Mercedes-Benz factory to receive a certificate attesting to the fact that the car had covered 100,000 kms and regaled him a diamond tie pin.

It must be stressed that besides regular maintenance the car has not required restoration. The canvas convertible hood, leather interior, woodwork, paint and chrome are all in very well preserved condition. Mechanically the car is `on the button' and is driven occasionally to maintain it in perfect running order.

Surely an unrepeatable opportunity for a discerning collector wishing to acquire a piece of Mercedes history that will cut a dash anywhere.
