Known History

A rare opportunity to acquire a genuine, continuous-history example of the iconic Group 4 Lancia Stratos, with a successful period Italian competition record and numerous podium finishes.

Delivered to its first Italian owner on the 19th January 1977 as a standard stradale version, in 1979 the car was converted to full Group 4 specification by (the still active and highly respected) University Motors. It went on to compete successfully in 29 Italian championship events between 1979 and 1982, driven almost exclusively by privateer Italian rally driver Francesco Ferretti, otherwise known as ‘Ragastas’. Well driven and prepared it achieved numerous podiums, an impressive 6th overall on the Giro D’Italia and an overall victory amongst its credits. To our knowledge it was never involved in any major incidents during competition.

After its successful competition career the car was purchased in 1983 by a French collector and remained with him (aside from a period with a friend) in France until being acquired by the current owner in March 2015. Having not been used properly since period the car was remarkable original but in need of re-commissioning thus the car was entrusted to classic Ferrari specialists Barkaways. The instruction was to address ‘anything and everything’ the car may require, and the final invoice totalled over £67,000.

Works included a full engine rebuild; the block was machined and washed through and the heads overhauled. The block and heads were then painted. New valves and guides replaced the original sodium-filled type. New alloy pistons, con-rods and crankshaft were installed, and the entire bottom end was balanced. New timing chains and timing gear drive bearings were fitted. Hayward & Scott Dunstall-type Stainless Steel silencers were fabricated and installed (the original open pipes were retained). The gearbox and differential were also rebuilt and a new clutch fitted along with a high output starter motor.

The carburettors were stripped and cleaned, and the fuel tanks were removed, dismantled and repaired. All the gauges were checked for calibration and the wiring system was fully checked over and replaced wherever necessary, therefore all switches and control systems function correctly.

Several improvements were also incorporated to improve reliability and performance including an electronic ignition module, an electric water pump (fully reversible to original/period specification) and a fuse fail buzzer to serve an early warning of a potential rising in water temperature. A new engine water impellor was also fitted as the original item can impede water flow (the original has been retained).

New Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic tyres were fitted, the brake lines were re-routed from exposed positions under the chassis, new high-performance road pads were installed, and the hydraulic handbrake was re-instated to ease hill starts. The fire extinguisher system was replaced, sympathetically, although the original period bottle was retained if required for show.

The body and fittings were sympathetically improved where required and originality retained wherever possible. Today the car is resplendent in its famous ‘Blue Mirror’ livery in which it competed in 1982. Blue Mirror was a knitwear factory based in Reggio Emilia who were personal sponsors of Ragastas. The Stratos is UK registered but (for posterity) also retains the original Italian number plate 353450-RE it raced with from 1980 again if required for show purposes.

‘Regastas’ himself presented the current owner with two trophies from his personal collection that will be included with the car, along with a history file containing a photographic record of the engine rebuild along with 350 period photos of the car in competition. Importantly it is also supplied with freshly approved FIA HTP documentation issued by the UK delegates, the MSA.

To quote the current owner; ‘the car is 100% on the button and so sweet!’ and it really is. Hugely eligible for a variety of retrospective events, most notably Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore it is a very correct example of its breed and has terrific provenance to boot. These are becoming increasingly difficult to find and we are honoured to bring this fine example to market.
