Known History

1970 Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1300 Scalino

One of the most collectable model years, largely original, low mile example of a truly iconic design with charm, grace and excellent driving character.

A very rare and unique example of the 1970 Alfa Romeo GT Junior Scalino (Stepnose) in exceptional condition. We obtained this very original Alfa GT in Italy in good shape from an attentive collector, and proceeded to carry out a very thorough reconditioning as required. The handsome navy blue paintwork is rich and lustrous, and the interior upholstery has been redone in the original grey tweed fabric. The combination is very authentic and representative of the typical GT Junior specification, as many of these cars were fitted with fabric interiors. As the last year of the desirable stepnose body style, this car features the classic twin headlamp grille with distinctive vertical turn indicators just outside of the round lights. In combination with the shapely dual cowl dashboard, this 1970 model is considered one of the best looking in the entire series. Bumpers, badges and trim in generally excellent condition, some minor pitting to the grille surround.

The tasteful interior features low back bucket seats, and a woodrim steering wheel with elegant alloy spokes and horn tabs. The stunning dash is accented by a large pair of matching analog dials for the speedo and tachometer, with twin auxiliary gauges in a central underdash mount. Period original Phillips multi-band radio is centered on the wood accented dash panel.

Minor rust issues in the pedal area and front fender were professionally addressed and paintwork skillfully matched as required. Reconditioning included deep cleaning of the engine bay and chassis underbody, new undercoating and a respray of the wheel arches. The suspension received new rubber bushings at many points, new sway bar links and new shock covers. Running gear upgrades included a new driveshaft guibo, rear driveshaft support, differential seal and fresh gear oil. The transmission was removed and inspected. Steering box adjusted and gaskets replaced.

The original engine shows good compression and oil pressure, and starts readily, runs very well. A new radiator has been installed. All drive belts replaced, air, oil and fuel filters replaced. Additional items attended to include a new ignition switch, full wire harness inspection and proper routing, sandblasting and powdercoating of airbox, original style underhood decals applied, new pedal covers for clutch, brake and gas pedals and a new battery. Practical and stylsh steel wheels feature attractive round vent holes and trim central hubcaps, as well as fairly new Michelin tires.

With very low original mileage (under 36K miles) and the comprehensive refit we performed, this Scalino drives beautifully and feels tight and solid on the road. The classic and tasteful color combination shows off the exceptional design to best effect. Performance is modest, but reasonable, with contemporary road tests quoting a 0-60 mph sprint of 11.8 seconds and a top speed over 105 mph.

One of the most collectable model years, largely original, low mile example of a truly iconic design with charm, grace and excellent driving character.

MODEL HISTORY : Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1300 Scalino

Introduced in 1963 as the successor series to the Giulietta Sprint Coupe, the Giulia Sprint GT and GT Junior were highly praised when introduced and remain very desirable collector cars today. Primary difference between these models was in the fitment of a 1600cc engine in the GTs and a 1300cc version in the Juniors (to take advantage of Italian tax laws). The interior of the Junior models was also simpler to allow a lower market price.

The styling was done by Giorgetto Guigiaro for Bertone and these are still considered some of the most handsome 4-passenger GT coupes ever designed. In production over 11 years, various detail changes and revisions to both the styling and engineering were incorporated. Purists tend to favor the earlier cars for their clean lines and simpler detailing. The unique “Stepnose” configuration in which the front edge of the hood sits above an indentation in the grille surround is particularly popular. This detail is characteristic of 1968 and earlier GTs and 1970 and earlier Juniors.

1968 marked the most significant one year update with new dashboards, revised suspensions and many other changes. The 1970 model features the best of the mechanical and interior upgrades, coupled with the coveted “scalino” (stepnose ) body and grille. For 1971 the GT Junior transitioned to the later style grille and hoodline. The GT Junior 1300 remained in production thru 1976. The GT series became the GTV and featured a 1750 cc engine in 1968 and a 2-liter version in 1972.

The GT and GTV models were imported in fairly large numbers into the USA and remain very popular today with values increasing notably in the past few years for very clean examples. The GT Junior was never officially imported here and remains fairly rare in the US. Collectors have recently begun to appreciate the clean lines, unpretentious detailing and enjoyable driving character as well as the relative affordabilty of the 1300cc cars.
