PROVENANCE Società per il Commercio dei Prodotti Alfa Romeo, Lugano, Switzerland (acquired new in 1954) Carlo Vögele, Switzerland (acquired in 1990) Private Collection, Switzerland (acquired by 1998) Christophe Bode, Munich, Germany (acquired circa 2003) Ian Wade, Yorkshire, UK (acquired in 2004) Southwood Car Company, Surrey, UK (acquired in late 2015) Current Owner (acquired from the above) THIS CAR In 1954, Alfa Romeo crowned the 1900 model line with a newly enlarged engine, utilizing the short-wheelbase version to create the 1900C Super Sprint. This beautifully restored example of the desirable five-window Touring-bodied 1900C benefits from factory documentation and a recent return to the original paint color. According to Alfa Romeo records, chassis 01678 was manufactured in late March 1954, finished in Verde Ortico (Nettle Green) paint, and sold in July through Filiale Milano to the Società per il Commercio dei Prodotti Alfa Romeo in Lugano, Switzerland. Although the 1900C’s early history is little known, in 1990 the car was acquired by Swiss collector Carlo Vögele, suggesting that it remained in Switzerland for over three decades. At the time of Mr. Vögele’s purchase, the SS had been parked for almost 20 years, and he commissioned Carrozzeria Lopane in Milan to conduct an extensive restoration, including a repaint in red (as documented by a specially prepared photo binder). By March 1998, the Super Sprint had been sold to another Swiss collector, and he in turn sold the car circa 2003 to Christophe Bode of Munich. Mr. Bode retained the Alfa Romeo only briefly before selling it in 2004 to the esteemed British enthusiast Ian Wade, one of the world’s foremost Maserati collectors. After being displayed in Mr. Wade’s private museum in Yorkshire for a number of years, the 1900C was sold in 2015 to the Southwood Car Company in Surrey. The dealer commissioned a mechanical freshening by B & F Touring Garage in Germany that included a rebuild of the carburetors and attention to the brakes. In July 2017, the Alfa Romeo was acquired by the consignor, a dedicated collector of coachbuilt postwar Italian sports cars. Initially interested in using the coupe in the Mille Miglia, the owner entrusted Rizza Classic in Rome with the car to perform a full cosmetic restoration in the original factory paint color. The interior was re-trimmed in a two-tone scheme of tan and cream leather, and a new set of correct wire wheels was fitted. Accompanied by an owner’s manual, jack, and tool kit, this authentically restored Alfa Romeo is documented with former registrations, restoration photos and invoices, copious paperwork in German, and a vehicle history by Southwood. The 1900C has been minimally used since the recent freshening, and retains a correct tipo 1308 engine, the desirable component that fueled numerous podium finishes during the mid-1950s Italian Sports Car Championships. Eligible for major touring events and ideal for concours presentation, this elegant Alfa Romeo would make a distinguished addition to any collection.
