Over the years, the appeal of emulating legendary Mustang drivers like George Follmer, Peter Revson, Jerry Titus, Parnelli Jones, Swede Savage and Sam Posey, the vast reservoir of accumulated Mustang race prep wisdom, abundant supplies of well-developed parts and the inherent safety of a carefully prepared and constructed Mustang have combined with the exhilarating performance that can be achieved at a reasonable price to make the first series ’ Mustangs one of the most popular of all cars to prepare for historic racing. Popularity has in turn encouraged historic race organizers to create literally dozens of enjoyable events – from brief sprints to hours long enduros – each year for Mustangs and their Pony Car counterparts.

It is the most exciting, enjoyable and cost-effective way to go vintage racing, particularly when there are professionally built, prepared and maintained Mustangs available at reasonable cost, like the example offered here. It began racing in 1994 and competed regularly in HSR events in the Southeast, winning one class championship in the Rolex Endurance Series and another in the MCI Sprint Series.

Built up from a rust-free ’ 65 Mustang, the engine is a fully race prepared 385 horsepower 302 cubic inch Ford V8 with Roush heads, roller rockers and a roller cam, breathing through a 600cfm Holley carburetor and single plane intake manifold. It drives through a 10 1/2-inch Hayes Gold clutch and 1970 Ford 2.32 close ratio top loader four-speed to a nine inch Ford rear axle with 3.70 Detroit Locker differential. Wheels are 8x16 inch American- style Halibrands. Koni shocks are fitted all around with 780 pound front coils, Global West front control arms, adjustable sway bar, 160 pound rear leaf springs and Gemini Panhard bar. Both an export brace and an adjustable Monte Carlo Bar beef up the front spring mounts.

Disc brakes are fitted at all four corners with dual piston calipers and 13-inch rotors up front and single piston calipers and 12-inch rotors at the back, actuated by an adjustable dual master cylinder. Safety equipment includes a 10 pound Halon fire system, five-point competition belts, six-point roll cage, window net, 22 gallon fuel cell and even pull-up style Plexiglas side windows.

This is a race-proven Mustang, meticulously maintained and raced 8-10 times a year by the previous owner. The present owner has raced it less frequently but has, if anything, even more carefully maintained it in the shop of his extensive collection. Its condition speaks for itself and prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect it closely as well as to review the full equipment and preparation details with an RM Auctions car specialist.
