In its first year of production, the Cadillac Motor Car Company created what was to serve as their reputation for the ensuing 101 years. It began with Henry Martyn Leland who partnered with financier and visionary Robert C. Faulconer. Together they represented the early future of the automotive industry. In 1901, the pair was contracted to design a revised engine for the Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout and that they did – so much so that Oldsmobile turned it down because of the increased cost it presented for Oldsmobile to retool the necessary machinery. Ironically, the same gentlemen who had been financing a young Henry Ford would welcome the pair only a year later, backing their venture into the fledging motor car market. By 1902, the first Cadillacs were on the road and by all reports they were years ahead of the competition in their fit, finish, quality and style.

The first Cadillacs were offered as a Runabout either with or without a Tonneau. The single cylinder Model As were rated at only 6.5 horsepower; however, they actually produced as much as 10 horsepower with a displacement of approximately 98 cubic inches. In 1903 approximately 2,400 cars were built and sold and they were successful from the start. The Model A performed exceptionally well in hard driving events worldwide, earning such distinctions as being the best car in its price range and an exceptional value for the cost given its quality, finish and mechanical engineering.

The example offered here has recently benefited from a complete and thorough concours level restoration that left nothing to chance. Finished in the striking color combination of maroon with a Carmine Red chassis, running gear and wheels, it is expertly pin striped with the correct black and gold highlights throughout. The interior displays a lovely black pebble grain leather executed to concours standards in the original pattern which helps complete this fully restored example ’ s concours presentation beautifully.

Widely accepted as one of the most unique examples of the period, the Cadillac Model A shown here represents a rare look into one of the most important American motor car manufacturer ’ s long history of quality, craftsmanship and excellence. It is an exciting car to drive and its arrival at concours and events has always caused a stir amongst the crowds, as many enthusiasts have never seen anything else like it and are witnessing one of earliest known Cadillacs for the first time. This example would make for a highly suitable and impressive entry to the historic London – Brighton run and would undoubtedly prove a capable and fun entry into the historic annual race.
