Back in 1962, Ford got the high performance ball rolling with its 1962 Ford Galaxie. Fitted with a 405hp, 406 Tri- Power V8 engine, it was capable of a 0-60 time in the seven-second range, and could pass through the quarter- mile traps in about 15.5 seconds at 92mph.

The 406 appeared early in 1962, having evolved from the earlier 390 tri-power V8. Developed purely for racing, the 406 Galaxie was only sold to the public to fulfill the Super Stock racing requirements. Upgrades distinguishing the 406 Galaxie from its rather mundane brethren included a special cam, valve gear, bearings, exhaust and ignition, the famous Tri-Power triple carburetor setup, the choice of numerous rear end ratios, and stiffer springs and shocks. Three-inch drums were fitted to bring this finless, cleanly styled Ford to a halt from a possible top speed of 140mph.

The 1962 Ford Galaxie 406 Tri-Power two-door sedan offered here with its 458 ft. lbs. of torque is rare in that it is one of the few examples built that wasn ’ t thoroughly worn-out on the drag strip. The Galaxie was purchased new and cherished by its first owner until 2005, and throughout those 43 years of ownership clocked less than 36,000 miles.

The high performance Ford was never undercoated and shows no rust, having been re-sprayed once about 25 years ago. The seats were recovered when buckets were added, yet incredibly the door panels, headliner, carpet, dash, garnish moldings and carpet are original and remain in excellent condition, as does all the original glass.

The G-Code 406, with its 11.4:1 compression ratio, the four-speed transmission and 4.11 rear end are all original, with matching numbers. Although currently not fitted, the original drivetrain comes with the Galaxie and can easily be re-installed as first delivered. At the moment, a top-loader four-speed transmission and 3.23 rear end are fitted. The changes were made only to make the Galaxie more street friendly. Power front disc brakes were also added for this reason. But all the original brakes, spindles, etc. come with the Ford.

This is a rare opportunity to own and enjoy not only one of Ford ’ s earliest muscle cars, but a very original, unmolested example. Where were you in ’ 62? Time to revisit!
