Wheelbase: 2,400 mm The Mistral, named after the cold northerly wind of southern France, was introduced by Maserati as the replacement for the successful 3500 GT. New styling, thanks to Giovanni Michelotti at Frua, was placed upon the updated and shortened Tipo 109 chassis, and the Mistral was first shown at the Turin Auto Show in November 1963. To many, it is considered one of Frua’s prettiest designs, and it has certainly retained its charm over 50 years after its premiere. Over the course of the Mistral’s production, its inline-six was gradually enlarged in size, from 3.5 litres to 3.7 litres and then, finally, to a 4.0-litre model. Offering the most horsepower of the series, with 265 horsepower, the Mistral 4.0 Coupé could sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, leading to a top speed of 255 km/h. Sadly, the Mistral would be the last Maserati model with an inline-six engine, ending a grand tradition that could trace its roots to Maserati’s grand prix racers. Just 868 of the 3.7- and 4.0-litre examples were produced by the time production concluded in 1970. This particular Mistral left the factory in July 1967, delivered to its first owner Dr. A. Balbo of Florence. It was then exported to the United States in 1969 into the ownership of Mr. M. Stelhorn of Bishop, California, who retained it until 1997—nearly three decades of ownership. He sold the car that year toanother American collector, a Mr. Shacklette of Baltimore, Maryland. Whilst in Baltimore, the Mistral received a through re-commissioning and service by the noted specialists at Treasured Motorcars. Mr. Shacklette then used his refurbished Mistral extensively, including an appearance at the 2007 “Le Bella Macchine d’Italia,” which included an 800-mile tour around Italy. Its first British owner acquired the Mistral in 2008, and several upgrades were made to enhance reliability. The car was also cosmetically refreshed with new Ivory paint and a re-trim in black, its factory-original colour scheme. In 2011 it was sold to a French owner who kept the car in his collection until 2015 when it was commissioned by the respected Classic Car Specialist GTC Motors to The Netherlands. Until today the car is still an outstanding example of the later four-litre, fuel-injected Mistral. Please note that all EU Taxes are paid and since 2015 it is registered on Dutch plates.
