On the eve of yet another World War, Ford ’ s Eugene Gregorie created a styling masterpiece in the 1940 Ford. All models were equipped with sealed beam headlamps and a steering column-mounted shift lever. DeLuxe models featured added glamour with chrome headlight trim rings with a parking light cast into its upper surface and a fancier grille. Total Ford sales reached 542,755 in 1940 under the guidance of Edsel Ford. Of that, only a mere 23,704 were two-door DeLuxe Convertible five-passenger Coupes.

Boyd Coddington took this already classic look and massaged it into a cleaner, smoother design and brought its 1940s powerplant and underpinnings into the twenty-first century.

Boyd Coddington is a household name as far as most hot rodders and custom car enthusiasts are concerned. Famous for dozens of the top hot rods and customs around the world and the creator of the Coddington custom wheels, he needs little or no introduction in most circles.

This custom-built 1940 Boyd retro-rod Ford Convertible Coupe ’ s subtle styling goes a long way. Its restrained styling is aided by its muted beige paintwork and complimentary chestnut brown, tight-fitting cloth top. The Convertible Coupe ’ s unadorned elegance, as seen in any well-executed design, utilizes the fundamentals of sculpture: shape, line, form and space, rather than loud colors and overly flashy chrome.

The paintwork leaves little to be desired in terms of beauty and depth of finish. Additionally, the carefully handcrafted panels are ripple-free, with a fit that appears as if the metalwork virtually flows together.

The chrome accents are very close to original Ford specification, but have all been given the Boyd treatment so as to not appear heavy or as awkward practical additions. The original split windscreen has also been updated for a lighter overall appearance.

Inside, the custom-tailored, all-leather interior mimics the exterior colors in a unique design appropriate for a 1940s automobile, while retaining a custom touch. Chrome mag-style Boyd Coddington wheels are congruent with the overall styling, yet add a sporty look.

The resulting updated design of this 1940 Ford Custom Convertible belies the fact that under the hood lies the heart of a lion. Powered by a LS2 Chevrolet V8 engine, this Convertible Coupe is ready to cruise the highway all day long and bring enjoyment and pleasures to both the modern hot rodder and the vintage enthusiast. Modern suspension and four-wheel disc brakes ensure the ride is smooth, comfortable and safe. If you want to indulge yourself in the delights of 1940s motoring, but demand the modern concessions of excellent handling, performance and comfort then this 1940 Ford Custom Convertible Coupe by the renowned Boyd Coddington should do just fine – and even better!
