Introduced in 1931 as a replacement for the aging Model L, the Model K entered the highest echelon of the automotive market in the early days of the Great Depression on a new 145-inch wheelbase chassis using a 385 CI version of the Model L’s V-8 engine modified with a 2-barrel Stromberg carburetor, higher compression and other tweaks to produce 120 HP. In 1932, Edsel Ford doubled down on his vision of offering the ultimate luxury and performance automobile, splitting the K into two ranges: the V-8 powered KA, built on a 136-inch wheelbase, and the majestic KB, built on a 145-inch wheelbase and powered by an all-new 448 CI V-12 engine. By 1934, the choice of engines had been cut to a single 414 CI version of the V-12, and in 1935, the A and B designations were dropped and significant design changes were introduced. The passenger area was moved forward 11 inches for better weight distribution; five rubber engine mounts, an improved cam design and needle-bearing roller tappets provided quieter operation, and new synchros made easier work of shifting the 3-speed manual transmission. Although both wheelbases were still available, the 136-inch chassis with LeBaron coachwork has remained the more popular with collectors who prefer its more compact sportiness. Dressed to turn heads in bright yellow with a dark yellow beltline and blue pinstriping, this special-order Model 542 LeBaron rumble-seat roadster is distinguished by its 17-inch wire wheels with wide whitewall tires, dual side mounts with steel covers, Guide Super Ray fog lamps, side-louvered hood Greyhound mascot and a rear luggage rack. Finished inside with beautiful tan leather upholstery, a two-gauge instrument cluster, dual mirrors, a locking glovebox and rear-seat foot rest, this is a singularly impressive example of the first of the great V-12-powered Lincolns.
