Known History

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid #800916

• Platinum Silver Metallic

• Leather Interior in Onyx Black Piped Acid Green

• #916 of 918

• 367 miles

Porsche introduced their entry into the plug-in hybrid Hypercar market with the fabulous 918 Spyder at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show after receiving 2,000 declarations of interest to the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. H.C.F. Porsche AG in Stuttgart, Porsche A.G. approved series development of the 918 Spyder. Porsche contracted Michael Maurer to design and development process which began at Weissach with the cars eventually being assembled at the famous Zuffenhausen factory to gp head to head with market segment competitors Ferrari’s La Ferrari and the McLaren P1.

The 918 Spyder was an instant sensation with Porsche customers with orders coming in from dealers around the world, Porsche began production of the 918 Spyder with the first version appearing at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. Porsche A.G. declared that only 918 versions of the $845,000 car would be produced and they had received over 800 orders by November 2014 with production set to begin in earnest a month later and lasting through June of 2015. Naturally, all units were spoken for well in advance of their production with Porsche’s order books full.

Power and Performance.

Similar to the 918’s sports prototype racing cousin, the Le Mans and World Endurance Championship winning 919 4-cylinder Turbo Hybrid, the road going version is a highly developed 4.6 liter V8 petrol engine without any engine belts (chain drive) which develops 618BHP. Additionally, two electric motors deliver an extra 280BHP effectively creating 898BHP and 944 N-M of torque driven through a seven-speed gearbox.

While the petrol engine delivers staggering 0 to 60MPH in 2.6 seconds performance, the plug-in hybrid battery power is even more impressive. While not the first Porsche plug-in hybrid, the 918 hybrid system is most certainly as technically advanced as any in the market segment. The 6.8 KW/h liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery and 312-cell energy storage system located behind the cockpit are recharged by the plug-in cord and the regenerative braking (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), which are systems developed directly from racing and all of which greatly increases fuel mileage and reduces emissions.

The body is made completely from carbon fiber with reinforced plastics forming the basis of the tub and the brakes are electromechanical, all with weight savings in mind. The 918 is described by EVO magazine as, “A paragon of technology, but huge fun at the same time”. And, from Richard Hammond of Top Gear, “McLaren have used hybrid technology to liven up a supercar today. Porsche have used hybrid technology to save the supercar for tomorrow. This is an important car”.

Styling and Aerodynamics.

Just as with predecessor, the Porsche Carrera GT, the 918 Spyder is a dramatic departure from Porsche’s signature 911 line. The natural direction for Porsche to go is to take the stunning Carrera GT and refine it to fit with current technology. Michael Maurer’s more sculpted shape has produced a Porsche so far removed from their standard line that they’re virtually unrecognizable from their more familiar siblings.

More akin to carbon fiber artwork, the 918 is a marvel of aerodynamic efficiency. Refined in the wind tunnel with subtle aero tweaks such as the small airfoil that sits atop the windscreen to carbon fiber winglets aft the rear tires.

The grill that sits atop the engine is designed to remove as much heat out of the car as possible. Porsche abandoned traditional exhaust ports out the back in favor of dramatic upward facing exhausts that sit literally atop the engine so everything is very much tucked up and out of the air flow all leading to a large wing at the back; something has to keep this rocket planted.

Inside, the 918 is all business. The entire cockpit is surrounded with carbon fiber. The removable roof panels which tuck neatly under the front bonnet for easy open top driving. The steering wheel is as impressive as anything seen in Formula One or top level sports car racing with the rest of the dash fairly sparse, definitely not a luxury tourer but rather a slimmed down street rocket whose sole purpose is to be driven and driven hard.

This 918.

This 918 Hybrid Spyder (#800916, #916 of 918 in the build order) is a documented one owner base model car, an ultra-low-mileage example with only 367 miles on the odometer. It is done in Platinum Silver Metallic body and all leather interior in Onyx Black with Acid Green piping.

“At Curated, we do not acquire cars simply for inventory but rather based on what the car is. We love interesting provenance, very low production, very low mileage, very special and often weird cars.”
