Ford built some of the finest cars in the 1930s with regards to styling and mechanical reliability. The lines of the 1936 Ford roadster were also quickly appreciated by the hot rodders and customizers of the 1950s.

Over the decades tastes have changed, and whereas the powerplant of the 1950s was the Ford Flathead V8, it ’ s the Chevrolet 350 that is the engine of choice for many hot rod enthusiasts. Easy to work on, readily available, economical to rebuild, reliable and with an excess of speed equipment at hand, the Chev 350 motor has proven itself time and time again.

As the decades slipped by, technology out-powered the original chassis and suspension design created by Ford in 1936. A resourceful aftermarket created the parts to help custom-build a 1936 Ford for today ’ s highways and higher speeds that is far safer and more enjoyable to drive.

This 1936 Ford Roadster was initially designed by the great Chip Foose himself. The building process took three years and was only completed last March. This classic, all-metal ’ 36 Roadster started life as a 5-window Coupe. Foose created the roadster based on the premise, “ If Ford had created a 1936 Ford Roadster Concept Car in 1936 what might it have looked like? ”

There are no welds, wires or lines evident. Everything was new and even all the bolts match perfectly. The Roadster was widened by two inches from the firewall back. Every panel was altered slightly or re-fabricated to produce a clean, flowing shape. The Roadster sports 1939 Lincoln Zephyr rear fenders, retailored to complement a unique fabricated rear end design. The front fenders were handmade as one-piece and pancaked. Full fender skirts add to the smooth, clean styling.

The custom frame and chassis were built by John West Fabrications, a Division of Dan Finks Metalworks. The ultra-modern suspension was based on that of a C-4 Corvette.

The stunning body prep and Indigo Blue paintwork was completed by Byers Paint and Restoration, who have been responsible for several of the Pebble Beach concours winners in the past. The underside is as nice as the upper body and interior. Inside, 1936 Studebaker gauges were fitted and the interior recovered in burgundy leather in an uncluttered, 1930s style.

Chrome was limited to accents other than the brightly polished teardrop headlamps and the handcrafted grille that was also raked 35-degrees.

Under the hood is a lively 355hp, 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 engine with a Barry Grant Tri-power unit. A custom air cleaner matches the E&J headlamps and Moon valve covers. Chrome Moon hubcaps with slotted mag-style wheels and wide tires provide lots of show as well as the required grip for enthusiastic driving.

Excellent in every respect and in like new condition, this stylish 1936 Ford Custom Roadster has won awards and recognition at the Seattle Roadster Show, the Del Mar Goodguys Street Rod Show, the FAB 5 Spokane, Washington Goodguys, and the Kirkland Concours d ’ Elegance in September.

With just 55 miles on its clock, there is plenty of new to wear off if you want to go for fast cruises, or lots to show if you want to go that route. Either way, you ’ re in for a fun ride.

Please note the estimate for this fantastic custom was published incorrectly. The correct estimate is $250,000 - $300,000 which better reflects the car's overall excellent design and construction and is more indicative of its fair market value.
