Ford introduced the Thunderbird as its response to the Chevrolet Corvette, but in reality the two cars were quite different. Thunderbird staked its claim as a personal luxury car, while the Corvette tried to make a reputation as the American sports car.

Thunderbird outsold Corvette more than three to one, due in large part to its excellent power, creature comforts and its air of sophistication. In 1957, the third and last year of production for the classic two-seater styling, Ford introduced what was thought to be the best Thunderbird. It had a more powerful engine with more horsepower, making it the fastest Thunderbird as well.

Ford gave the Thunderbird a complete makeover for 1957, with a clean and open grille, while the rear fenders and trunk were extended to accommodate the spare tire. The “ high-canted fenders ” , Ford ’ s term for the 1957 ’ s angled tailfins of full size Fords, also appeared on the Thunderbird, nicely accenting the longer trunk and fenders. Overall, the 1957 Thunderbird ’ s design was very well received and sales increased a third from 1956.

The Dusk Rose example presented here was part of Dick Duncan ’ s “ Memories of Ford ” Museum in Sterling Heights, Michigan and was treated to a full, professional restoration to excellent standards. Thunderbird enthusiasts refer to this very rare Dusk Rose color as a ‘ three percent ’ color, since only three percent of the T- birds that rolled off Ford ’ s line assembly in 1957 bore this livery.

Complete with a white hard top, this example is equipped with a plethora of factory options including power steering, power brakes, windshield washers and wheel skirts.

With its unique color and practical convenience features, this Thunderbird is a highly suitable example for anyone looking for one of the most celebrated cars of the 1950s.
