When the Duesenberg brothers produced their first road-going production car, it was bound to be something special. The two were already firmly established in the world of motor racing, with a reputation for building fast, powerful, and reliable racing cars. Their groundbreaking debut road car featured many of the lessons learned on the track. Generally known as the Duesenberg Model A, it was initially marketed as the “Straight Eight.” The engine was a particular point of pride, being America’s first serial production inline eight and featuring highly advanced specification, including an overhead camshaft and a detachable crossflow cylinder head. It was also the first car in America to feature hydraulic brakes, with finned alloy drums. Despite limited production, the Model A was enough to attract the attention of E.L. Cord and pave the way for the sensational Model J to follow.

Presented in a lovely two-tone grey livery with burgundy wheels and chassis, this handsome Model A features stylish Touring coachwork by Millspaugh & Irish, the Indianapolis-based coachbuilder responsible for many early Duesenberg bodies. This car is the subject of a meticulous restoration in the hands of a knowledgeable enthusiast and it is recognized by the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club as a certified Category One. The engine is a period-correct replacement, believed to be fitted by the factory in 1924. Shortly after its restoration, it was shown at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and participated in the pre-event tour.

The car has garnered its Senior First Prize in Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Club judging, Best Duesenberg at the club’s West Coast Meet (twice), and the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Trophy, recognizing it as the finest ACD automobile shown that year.

It remains in superb condition today, displaying beautiful finishes and detailing. With its highly advanced chassis and powerful overhead-cam engine, this Duesenberg Model A is well suited to open-road enjoyment, while also remaining a fitting concours entrant for its new owner. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/af19.
