No Corvette was more anticipated than the ZR1, with its LT5 all-aluminum dual overhead camshaft four valve per cylinder V8 engine. And probably no Corvette has lived up to its expectations better than the ZR1.

Finally released to an eagerly waiting market as a 1990 model, the LT5-powered ZR1 was a complete performance package available only as a coupe. The LT5 engine delivered 375 brake horsepower at 5800rpm and 370 foot-pounds of torque at 4800rpm. The ZR1 featured three-inch wider rear bodywork to accommodate 17- inch diameter 315/35 ZR-rated Goodyears, making the ZR1s ’ appearance very distinctive on the road. Additionally, the ZR1 package included the ZF six-speed manual transmission, Selective Ride Control, power leather sport seats, low tire pressure warning system and the top of the line Delco Bose stereo. All this added a whopping $27,016 on top of the Corvette Coupe ’ s $32,479 base price, making the ZR1 the most expensive car GM built.

The ZR1 ’ s distinctive appearance and unique performance guaranteed it instant desirability. Waiting list positions brought five figure premiums. Many of the first year ’ s production of 3,049 (out of total Corvette production of 23,646) went immediately into collections.

The ZR1 presented here was finished in teal with a black interior, making it one of only 93 ZR1s produced in this color during the 1990 to 1995 production run. Handmade headers with three-inch Desert Drive exhaust create an imposing exhaust note and have bumped up power a notch. The car was also fitted with a 4.09 gear assembly set-up by Sports Fab. The modifications to the exhaust system and the absence of catalytic converters make passing emissions tests difficult and in order to obtain registration the ZR1 will likely require approximately $2,000 - $3,000 in work to return the exhaust system to its original configuration. The car has less than 32,000 miles from new and has been very well loved and maintained.

As a carefully preserved collectable, or as a wonderful and prized road car, ZR1 ownership brings with it entree into an enthusiastic and loyal owners ’ group and is a rare opportunity to possess a refined limited production Corvette with unique character and breathtaking performance.
