An attractive and stylish car in fine condition, tastefully finished in very deep green with particularly appealing and lovely green leather interior, still soft and supple, with just the right amount of maturity. Handsome design, swage lines, ‘trouser crease’ wings, quarter bumpers and an impressive set of correct lamps as well as a full set of ‘Ace’ wheel discs, all add greatly to the car’s appeal. The tail of the car is particularly swish, being curvaceous and well-balanced, topped with a slender but practical luggage rack. The car is smart throughout, structurally sound and running well. It has a large sunroof as well! Correct throughout, including under the bonnet, fitted with the original engine, A5BA (fitted with an external oil filter upgrade), twin Bakelite 'mushroom top' coils, etc, and a pleasingly appropriate appearance - rather than an over-restored one as is sometimes the case! A lovely car.

Chassis No. B9BL Reg. No. BGK 989

Snippets: Merchant Bankers of Japan
The 1st owner of B9BL was a Noel Griffin whose residence was given as Bailey’s Hotel, Gloucester Rd, London. Bailey’s was built circa 1874 by Aldin & Son for Sir James Bailey (MP for Walworth), when the hotel was completed it boasted 9 stables enabling the hotel to provide a “carriage service” for its discerning guests. By 1936 B9BL had been sold to George Sheavyn Sale (1896/1976) who due to his father’s occupation as a Merchant Banker had been born in Japan. The achievements of Charles Vincent Sale (1868/1943) included directorships of Sale Tilney & Co, Sale & Co Shipping, Sun Life & Fire Offices, Merchant Trading Co Ltd (Japan), Governor of Hudson Bay Company (1925/31) and during his lifetime was the recipient of Order of the Rising Sun & Sacred Treasure, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, Office of the Order of Couronne, Knight of the Order of Dannebrog!. During WWI Charles’ eldest son Alfred served with the Royal Navy on the vessel President II; George Sheavyn joined the 11th Hussars and in 1918 was awarded the Military Cross for his “conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty”; the youngest son - Walter - was too young to serve in WWI but during WWII he joined the Royal Horse Guards serving as Commanding Officer for the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment and he was awarded the OBE for his services. Both Alfred & George joined the family firm of Sale & Co with George taking over the company reins after his father’s retirement. From 1950 to 1954 B9BL is shown as being with a Captain Crane and later a Lt. Col. G. N. Preston but little information has been found regarding these owners.
