Chassis: AM*101*927
Engine: AM*101*927
Body-no.: 18

According to Ermanno Cozza from the Maserati Storiche department this wonderful and special Vignale Spyder was sold new in May 1960 to Dott. Emanuele Sartorio from Torino, Italy. Dott. Sartorio got a very early Vignale Spyder with some almost unique features such as a long bonnet directly ending at the windshield, smaller air-outlets in both fenders and different chrome details compared to later production cars.

In fact, chassis AM*101*927 must be regarded as one of only approx. 5 “pre-production” Vignale Spyders. In almost all (body) parts a stamped no. “18” can be found. The under-floor differs completely from later production cars and is the same as can be found by 3500 GT Touring Coupes. Dott. Sartorio ordered the car with the desireable 5-speed ZF-gearbox and 5½X400 RW 3661 Borranis. The car has front discs and rear drums (for the later production cars rear discs were an option, too).

After a rather short Italian episode, AM*101*927 was exported to the States already in the 60’s and registered in California. Benefiting from the mild and dry Californian climate it was re-imported to Europe in the late 80’s and subsequently auctioned at the Coys Nuerburgring auction in August, 1991, still unrestored but in good shape and condition. It was then sold to a well known collector from Northern Italy and stayed there until 2002, when it was sold to Germany where it resides until today.

Painted in the very tasteful and unusual Maserati-colour “luci del bosco” (the lights of the forest) which can be seen in the pictures, it is undoubtedly the perfect companion for a sunny Sunday afternoon trip along the coast line from Rapallo to Monaco.

AM*101*927 is one of very few Vignale Spyders in still unrestored condition and is not suffering from some halfhearted restoration experiments in the past. Of course, all mechanical components such as brakes, brake master cylinder, clutch and electrics are now completely overhauled (in 2006). It always found a good and caring home in its life though always used regularly in the summer. Indeed, this car is really a good driver in the best possible meaning.

Fact file:

- One of only 242 Maserati Vignale Spyders produced
- special features (3cm lower windshield, long bonnet etc.)
- matching numbers
- new 16”-Borranis fitted and original 5½ Borranis additionally with the car
