Known History

Born in 1965 from an idea by Bertone and designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the 850 Spider graceful and full of panache, was presented at the same time as the coupÚ version in March 1965. This sporty version met the young clientele, who wanted brilliant performance combined with a certain operating economy.

In March 1968, exactly three years after the launch of the Fiat 850 Spider, the Turin-based company presented the Fiat 850 Sport Spider, thus creating the second series of the now popular "Spiderina". To better meet the regulations of many foreign countries, the headlights were positioned vertically and openings for the outflow of water were maintained in the front. The front direction indicators were positioned in the lower part of the bumper, while the lateral ones found a place on the sides of the mudguards. At the rear, a panel in body color was applied, in the center of which the identification plate from the new Fiat 850 Sport design was placed behind. Bumpers with rubber protections were applied to the bumpers, the chrome rims and cups retained the same design, however it was possible to request alloy wheels.

Some different finishes, however, were reserved for versions for the foreign market: the bumpers that provided for a tubular bar placed between the two rostrums were thus applied. The shape of the side direction indicators also changed. The dashboard mounted on the version reserved for the foreign market was with a brushed aluminum panel covering, with a slightly different shape than in Italy, and the handle for the passenger was also eliminated to make room for the car radio.
